Riding with an iPod

Post by StuMiller »

AN Albury motorcyclist who blamed his iPod for his failure to pull over when police were pursuing him has been convicted of dangerous driving.

Ross Andrew Wilson, 25, of Candlebark Court Thurgoona, pleaded not guilty to the charge, claiming the iPod earphones he was wearing beneath his helmet meant he couldn't hear the police car.

He also said the jacket he was wearing had prevented him seeing the police car in his rear-view mirrors.

The Albury Local Court was told Wilson had ridden on for about a kilometre with police following him, lifting the front wheel of his bike for about 45m.

But the excuse failed to wash with Magistrate Geoff Hiatt, who found him guilty after twice watching in-car video from the police vehicle.

When heraldsun.com.au contacted Mr Wilson this morning, he declined to be interviewed and said he wanted to put the matter behind him.

Wilson was convicted and banned from driving for 12 months and fined $800.

Woah no way!
Listening to the iPod under you're helmut is the same as having the radio on in you're car, that is it doesn't block out all the sounds, wind is still bloody strong and for me atleast I know I can hear everything around me fine, perhaps it's a volume or type of earphone thing?

Or... he could of just been nit picking to fight the charge.

You'd think checking who was behind you before popping a mono would be a good idea?

I have tried to wear erphones under the lid, but the discomfot that they give overides any enjoyment from listening to music. I also kinda like to just be with my own headspace when riding. I talk to people all day long, so it's nice to not have to communicate with anyone for a little while@@ :D

I heard a story once that someone did a stoppie in front of a red Hyundai Getz one day riding to work with a mate. The guy in the Getz then flashed his police badge at the riders and directed them to pull over, but the Getz-driving police man just kept driving and didn't come back leaving them confused on the side of the road

I have earphone earplugs and they do block out all the sound if you turn them up. You just need to use your eyes more when you ride with them.

It's very easy to do a wheelie in front of the wrong people if you aren't paying attention or if you do them with traffic around and it's 3 points for neg driving and $400+ (even if you didn't mean for it to lift and it only gets 6 inches off the ground).

I use an Ipod while on the highway, wouldn't use it in town.
