I-K wrote:Ummm, Kempy, I think you might find that your $200-a-year policy is for third party property only. The only thing it'll cover your bike for is damage inflicted by an uninsured other party-at-fault, up to a certain maximum ($3000 in my case).
*Does big double take*

Erm.... thats exactly what I said.

"However, in my opinion you're best off just gettin third party fire and theft, its bloody cheap, will protect you if you run into someone else, or god forbid your bike gets stolen (which isn't a very hard thing to do). So for that, its definatley worth it, and even me (19 yrs old) riding a 2001 ZX7R get that for $200 a year. "

Ie, I've got 3rd party fire and theft, for $200 odd a year. Which will cover me if I run into someone else (ie, the insurance will cover damage to their vehicle), and cover me if someone knicks my bike.

And I never assumed (hell its news to me), that my insurance would cover any damage to my bike whatsoever, but thanks for the info all the same

Just out of interest, does insurance cover you for personal injury and loss of work? When I got knocked off in England I got private health care for my back, lost work time, transport costs while I was without a bike and all sorts. There the kind of costs that reallyt rack up (ask CHuck - see show your scars in Site Suggestions). Imaging having a year out of wotk with huge hospital bills and no cover to help you pay!

Also, I remember being all excited and fighting an urge to do cartwheels with the approach of my 25th birthday, going "All right. Cheap insurance, here I come.". Started ringing up for more quotes, and got "No, the threshold is now 29."... well, fakyaz, then.
You need to move to Qld or other area classed as rural :)

Mike CTP insurance (Dearest part of your rego) can be sued if you have a major drama or your pillion does, but no "income insurance" is required to cover any loss of income while your away from work. Medicare will pick up the "fix me up" bills but being public system its needy goes first so you can get jerked around a fair bit.

From what I understand, if you're licensed and riding a registered vehicle, the TAC will pickup the tab for medical expenses for a road accident. If you don't have an overnight stay in the hospital you may need to pay up to a certain amount before they step in, but it does include ongoing payments if you are permanently disabled. Not sure about covering loss of income, however.

That's if you have your accident in Wiktoria, whatever the circumstances.

In NSW, if you fly off the road of your own accord, or if the other guy fucks off, you're entirely on your own, yet you pay more than double for your compulsory third party personal injury cover.

Something to take into account the next time you start thinking nasty thoughts about coppers hiding in bushes with cameras.

You sure? The CTP insurer of the guy who wiped me out is clocking up one hell of a lost-income bill for me.

Granted, this didn't happen in Queensland, but... his 'Cruiser_was_Qld registered.

Unless you happen to be one of the needies...

...what's more, though, the only thing facilitating prompt treatment in the private system is its current level of surplus capacity. Once that shirinks, triage will be the sole determinant of who gets treatment first there, too, and someone needing a triple bypass will consistently get an operating room slot ahead of someone with a crocked knee, elbow or even spine.

A good trick i pick up of my doctor ex, is to learn the symptoms of a very high risk issue that can also fit in with what you are there for.
its a nasty trick but it does get you to the front of the line...

Is there anyone here who has bought a brand new bike without full comp?
Yes, I bought a 954 in Sept 2003 at a runout price of $15k. It got stolen about 8 months later out of my garage.

Anyway, let that not deter you. I still wouldn't have insured it as I hadn't turned 25, and yes, I've saved myself a bundle over the years. I figure I lost about 6k out of the exercise, perhaps less, considering I've been riding for a few years and had multiple ZX6Rs etc.

I now own a ZX10R, that's insured for 17k, and I pay $1500 a year ('cause I'm 25 now, it's actually worth while). I'm not worried about the crash factor, it's mainly the theft factor, and I'm sure if I live in this house long enough, they'll have another go at taking this bike too.

If you're under 25, I can't see it making sense. When you turn 25 then you can turn it into your favour, but that's about it.

Although murphys law would have it ... my whole house is insured now, including a few mountain bikes that I'd make a fucken bundle on if they got flogged. I'll prob never get touched again now!

Interesting, berry interesting! So how do you go about getting medical cover in NSW? Full comp insurance cover you for that?

Nope. Comprehensive insurance only covers_material_damage. In NSW, compensation works on a "You crashed. What do you want now, a round of applause?" principle.

Its not how good you ride or what you do, it's all the other dickheads on the road you need to worry about and what happens if someone steals it!!!
If you can't afford the insurance don't buy it, buy something you can afford with the insurance factored in...
