I believe that Buell had the patent on under belly exhausts which only ran out a few years ago, thus why no other manufacturers could have the same set up. Buells claim along with the fuel tank being in the frame was to lower the centre of gravity.
Having never had a bike with under tail exhaust I can not comment on how hot they get, but can tell you a sales mans spiel when I was looking the FZ6, his claim was that the under tail exhaust would keep the pillion arse warm during winter!
