Thanks for your replies everyone. So, what areas DON'T we want to live in?
Gosling1 wrote:1deg ?? that's not cold mate...  Besides, it's only that low right in the dead of winter, for a short period. The temps here over the years have become a lot milder than they used to be.......its actually colder in Glen Innes for mean winter temps than it is here. Today for example - 22deg and perfect autumn sunshine..... :kuda: mmmmm noice.
I saw on last nights news that it was going to be 0 deg in Canberra last night, its only Autumn! Winter morning starting work at 6:45am *brrr* new_shocked.gif

The commute will be about the same as I do now, so yes, a drive back to Qld to see my folks, and a drive to Geelong to see his folks will be in order to get the kms on the car! My sister lives in Berridale in the Snowies, and reckons that there are many who live there and in Cooma who commute to Canberra each day...their fuel bill must be high though.
Cheers,
Anne

Melba, I've heard stories about a crackpot who lives there and gets angrier every year that passes. Some say he lives in a shed behind the family home and only comes out to be fed and bathed, and the bathing is only a rare occurrence. This shed is said to be engulfed in a toxic cloud but has magical powers, a broken down old frame can enter one day and a few weeks later come out a fully fledged motorcycle, more time than not green in colour. :kuda:

I've also heard the only way to coax him out is with the promise of a bike whoring session or a few donuts.

So I guess you are talking about Gos there, dub! :)

I was offered the job at Canberra Hospital ICU today. I am stunned, as I didn't think I did that well in the interview. We have a lot to think about, such as leaving the family (particularly the nieces and nephews) and friends, and we have been trying to start our own family, which we have to put off again now for at least 6 months because of maternity leave. But, we are leaning towards going for at least 12 months, to give it a go. Big changes ahead!
Cheers,
Anne

sounds good Esie - moving locations like this is always a big change, I hope it works out for you well.......if you need a hand with anything at this end let me know, I am sure the crew down here will be able to help out anyway we can.

Congrats Esie! As Gos said, let us know if there's anything you need a hand with.

The ICU is in the early stages of implementing a new CIS to replace their paper charts and do all sorts of other flash stuff so it'll be interesting 8)

Thanks Mick, Gos :) At this stage we are considering logistics, such as moving the cats there, and also getting the two bikes down there (do we send ahead and store them at some kind person's house... :) or do we tow them.

Mick, are you in the know about the ICU? :) The PAH and RBH ICU's here already use a CIS for all of their patient data, but the smaller ICU's (such as the 2 x Mater ICU's where I work) still use paper. I am a bit of an IT geek, so I look forward to the CIS!
Cheers,
Anne

personally, i much prefer living in canberra than Brisbane......

However the Bne climate wins hands down........ The down side of canberra is the cost of housing, however the remaining cost of living is pretty sweet! I really miss the awesome fruit and veg markets.... way way better than what you get up this way! I will definitely move back to canberra in the future.... the real bonus for us in Bne is that my family are on the GC....

I'm only on the periphery of what's going on at the moment. I was on the tender evaluation committee for the CIS and it looks like a good product, but they'll definitely need some geeks down there to make the most of it ;)

The project team are located right next to me (for the moment, I'm getting relocated soon) and I'll be involved in integration of the system with other hospital systems.

Got plenty of room for a couple of bikes if you want to send them down earlier :kuda: the dog might make a mess of your cats though

Congratulations Esie!

I'd stay in Brissie though. Canberra winter really really really sucks. It's like the life gets sucked out of you and you just want to hide under a blanket (or 7) until late October when it starts to feel a little bit warm (ok that's just me - I really don't like the cold)

As for places to avoid living, I think in Canberra most suburbs have their good and bad areas - I'm not very familiar with the southside though which is where you'll probably want to be (you'll learn about the great north/south divide soon enough  )

If youse need a hand with anything when youse get down there don't hesitate to give us a yell :)

Avoid Richardson, Kambah, Anything south of Calwell, Charnwood (at all costs) Narrabundah, dodgy parts of Red Hill and Griffith. Most of Woden is OK. Thats pretty much it. See the map link :D
