tune up

Post by ezzazrx »

I've fitted a K&N filter to the Rex,and also cut the yoshi in half; i'm thinking I need to get the bike tuned up as she's burbling alot on the decel--- any thoughts apprieciated.

the ZeeRex mafia will be along any minute now with all the advice you could hope for !

here is a bit to get started....'burbling' on the overun, could be a leak in the exhaust somewhere - sounds like the bike is running a tad lean, so you may need to lift the needles a notch or 2 to fix that.

Fitting a K&N + cutting the muffler will lean out a carbed bike for sure.
You need to stick it on a dyno & get an AFR reading at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, & full throttle, that will tell you which way to go with jetting, needle postion, & idle mixture.
If its burping at closed throttle it almost 100% certian to be lean at closed throttle.
This can all be fixed & the upshot is you will gain a heap of HP in the prosses..

No J-rex no jet kit, and the hoses you mention haven't been touched, going on the advise above I've booked her in for a carby balance and a tune-up at the Kwaka dealer in Dandy, thanks blokes.( A bit of extra H.P.will be apprieciated)

If you have no luck at the Kwaka dealer in Dandy you could always try Tristan at redline. I've had some work done there and never had any problems

Ok, doubt that a carb balance would fix it?, especially if you've added a K&N filter.......like the others have said, popping on decel usually mean a lean condition...

Apart from getting a jet kit, all you can do is play with the mixture screws, try a little bit richer (they're generally out of whack from the factory, mine were all uneven)....and remove the emissions plumbing, this definitely helps with a fully exhaust system but should still make a difference a slip on....
There's a bit of info on how to do it on zrxoa and zrxoc....just need to plug a hole in the airbox, a couple of vacuum caps for the carbs and block off plates for the valve cover ( i just used some brass welsh plugs for these)......

Jet kit would be the way to go though...

I'll mention the jet kit, and the possibility that she's running lean, I'm hoping because it's a kwaka dealer they'll
be clued up on what she needs. The emissions plumbing will be next.

US ebay. JC Motors is a good place to start looking. There are heaps of big bike warehouses in the US that ship globally, and they all do it far better and quicker than any of the local suppliers - and far cheaper too.

By getting rid of the pollution crap you will cut a lot of the burbling and popping on deceleration. You can get block off plates to do it neatly but you can do it on the cheap by just blocking off the hoses. As others have said, once you start messing with filters and cutting exhausts you need to sort your jetting. A timing advance plate will give you a bit better throttle response with a ZRX too.
