Ride report - Mudgee loop

Post by waynemorgan »

After planning a couple of 3-4 day rides time and health dictated a shortened a shortened loop - out to Lithgow -> Mudgee ->Singleton for an overnight stay then home via Putty Road.

Left Penrith about 9:30am on Sunday. The planwas to get to Lithgow via Bells but the day was pretty overcast / drizzly. Decided to go up the Great Western instead - drizzle started as we crossed the Nepean river and all the way up thru the Blue Mountains. Fog, drizzle, heavy rain then more fog and drizzle. Pulled over for a coffee at Mt Victoria wondering what the hell we were doing riding in this crap. Talked to a few locals there and everyone agreed that it would be fine past Lithgow - and it was!

The ride from Lithgow to Mudgee was awesome. Overcast but comfortable. Cruised along and enjoyed it. At Mudgee we stopped to have lunch but neither of us felt like eating so we had a cold drink and headed off.

About 5 min out of Mudgee we hit a thunderstorm and the rain bucketed down. I've never ridden in really heavy rain and discovered that it presents new challenges. Fortunately it was fairly brief. Continued on our way to the turn off to the Golden Highway.

Golden Highway - I really enjoyed it but there's little in the way of corners. When we stopped at the turn off we discussed camping in Singleton but decided that with the rain we might be better at a motel. Arrived in Singleton around 5pm and headed to a motel I've used in the past. Booked in, unloaded and walked to the pub for steak dinner (fantastic dinner).

Left this morning around 9:30am and headed for the Putty road. Weather was overcast but there had been rain- the road was wet but not soaked. Noticed a few spots of diesel on the road. Stopped at the Halfway house for a quick look then again at Colo Heights where I had a bite to eat.

Split up at Richmond road and I arrived home around 1pm.

Really enjoyed the ride - even with the rain. Learned a lot and certainly have more confidence with my riding. Very happy with the bike - 22 years old and didn't miss a beat.

Thanks Disco for a great 2 days on the bike - thoroughly enjoyed it!

Good stuff, next time take the turn off to Kandos/ Rysltone and to Bylong. Much better way to Singleton with plenty of corners.

Shame about the weather but at least you were riding.

I have riden this road you speak of, in the wet - and it was REALLY good fun (even on a bike with "race" tyres) eh Rod  ;) :kuda: First time I rode it it (dry not wet) the road was broken by some - sometimes knarly - dirt after Bylong, not good on someone elses $35K+ motorcycle

Good stuff fellas, see if you had of come riding with us in the rian on Sundays you would have enjoyed it more ;)

Thanks everyone. It was a great ride and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Touring is why I got a bike in the first place.

The ride was put together on fairly short notice - we'd actually planned a longer one but things cropped up.

Funny thing - I've always feared doing a Putty road run with a group (actually I fear most group rides) because I'm so slow on corners but after coming down it today in the wet I'm really excited about doing it again - ASAP :D

Don't tell anyone but that dirt section is now sealed and is now one of the most fun stretches of road.
