Australian Standard Sticker change

Yes it does Owen ....,. his brand does not have a sticker that shows complience, therfore it would in the past get knocked back.
EG simpson helmets could never be used by motorcyclists in Australia for road racing competition... The entire range lets say (BRAND)

Now with the link to the latest news...... all I can see in this section is them stroking themselves about having accreditation. Are there helmet details somewhere in there?

Yeah thats the same site I linked to before Rob. Just states the ID code on the back of my helmet to that model.

No one has mentioned ID numbers yet however I have bumped PCRA and am still awaiting their reply.

Guys, the number on the old 5 tick helmet is not, repeat not, a helmet serial number.
It is the batch number ONLY i.e., pertains only to the helmets processed on a particular day.

the real serial number (from the manufacturer) is somewhere inside the shell, usually obscured by the liner and other important bits.

Fair enough mm that's interesting, but it also makes it an individual number for that helmet........ what the scrutes want a number they can define that helmet with..... it just happens to be on the shiny sticker on the outside & easily accessible

Looks like we are all set to go next year. I'd dare suggest that all the competition bodies are awaiting the new Regs from MA but they are aware of the change to the helmet law (well at least they are now anyways )

spoke to the Chief Safety Officer at Calder this morning re this ( as I am looking to go to an Open Practice day there)
and they have adopted the ANDRA stance re AS stickers on hemets...for anything happening out there

He also mentioned Winton have taken the same tack (which i will have to confirm as i am there early Jan next year)

The Australian Standard for motorcycle helmets is AS/NZS 1698.

This requires a certification mark, which is a statement of "compliance" or "conformance" with the Standard. Normally, these appear as a sticker on the outside, but also have a sewn-in label inside.

The manufacturer must ensure that any certification mark includes the number of the Standard and be capable of verification, such as by reference to batch and test records at RTA CrashLab.

Manufacturers may buy a licence to use the "tick" Mark, or they may not.
What matters is whether it meets AS/NZS 1698 and has a certification mark.

Overseas helmet manufacturers may employ independent quality assurance companies in their own countries and use a local Australian contractor to supervise testing and process the necessary paperwork after RTA CrashLab testing has been passed. These use their own "Conformance" mark.

Look inside the helmet, AS/NZS 1698 requires permanent lettering no less than 1.5mm with manufacturers name, model, size, month and year of manufacture, the words "Vehicle User's Helmet" and Instructions to User.

Any helmet that complies with the Standard will offer the same level of protection, with no regard to the price. A cheap helmet or an expensive one will work just as well.



Use of a non-AS/NZS 1698 approved helmet may be seen as "contributory negligence" in the case of a head injury.


The Snell test and the DOT (Dept of Transport) Standard are for the American market - to be sold in Australia, a helmet must have the AS 1698 sticker as well.
