Suzuki GSX650F, don't know if it's LAMS in QLD but probably the best bike he can get in his situation.

Have you looked at a second hand KLE. They are a bit more road focused than the KLR and give you two cylinders instead of one. The engine is the same as the ER5 from memory. They are LAMS approved in NSW but don't know in QLD. Worth a look.

KLR650 is on QLD LAMS, GSX650F isn't, to answer the above

buying a helmet next week, learning on my Z650, buying a bike before xmas. No real decision yet, but a list f bikes to go and sit on, peer at, price, masturbate over, spec up, query modification costs, etc...
