ZRX 1100/1200 noises, buzzes and rattles.

Post by Woof »

Hi folks. :D

Down the page (in another topic) Pete had some rattles and buzzes and it appears that he now has them solved, which is pretty cool. :) Just the normal shite like buzzing fairings, loose bolts (shudder  ) and radiator shroud/mounts. In his topic there are lotsa good ideas for keeping your Rex quiet and happy.

My '06 rex has 82 000 ks on it now and recently I've had a few new ones, which is to be expected.

First one. The carb-heat filter was rattling against the alternator cover, so I removed it and replaced the filter & hose assembly with a short length of 4.8 mm fuel hose which I routed neatly around the front of the alternator. Cleaned up the look of the engine nicely and the rattle is gone. The removed filter had nothing in it, so I'm not too worried.

Second one. Had a minor engine rattle at idle which was the alternator cush-drive adaptor screw loosened by a mere 1/4 turn. Removed alternator and reinstalled the drive adaptor screw nice and tight (to standard torque) with some locktite. Alternator back on and noise gone. Sweet!

Third one. Now, I may have caused this myself by washing the bike (carefully) at a car wash rather than doing it by hand in the garage, which is what I normally do. ( Du'h! I was in a hurry, right.) Anyhow, now I get a high speed buzz or rattle at 3950-4000 rpm on the highway. It won't do it at rest with throttle, and the buzz comes and goes over bumps and stuff. But, it is definitely in the engine. Hmmm.. I think it may be the alternator bearings (unhappy at being wet) or the alternator fan. I'm gonna check tonight, but it is kinda wierd.

Anyhow, as some of the questions we get are about noises, buzzes and rattles, I thought we could share some of the things we know about this subject and especially with some Rexes getting some serious kays on em.

Cool. 8)

Luv yooz all,

Woof.....

Back when mine was around 6000k's, I had the left front engine mount bolt come loose, only about 1/4 of a turn but it manifested as a buzz around 2700-3800rpm that sounded like it was coming from the fairing area.

Have also had a buzz/rattle that came from the factory radiator gaurd being a loose fit where it slips over the top of the radiator, this started @ around 60'000k's.

Check em' out ;) .

Ohh yeah, check your swingarm bolt, another unique rex feature is it's not tight enough from factory. :kuda:

Checked the swingarm bolt and it's good and tight. I've got the alternator off and the bearings seem a little tight. I'll check the fans today and see how I go. I guess the idea is that we build up a core of knowledge about Rex noises. Catch-yooz all later. 8)

All Rex owners are responsible citizens of society  , role models if you like to the lesser minions that hide behind fairings  and wear multicoloured cow skins, as a Rex owner you have a heavy burden to bear in educating the masses are you ready for this type of commitment XXking.gif dontknow.gif

I've had the front fairing buzz since new, very annoying.....its actually gotten worse since i put the 44T sprocket on the rear!......No matter what i do, cant seem to get rid of it, regular tightening of all the bolts/screws in the front does a little, but it never goes..

On a good note though, all the other nuts/bolts seem to be ok :D ..
