Prolonged direct sunlight on tyres. Should I be concerned?

Post by tim »

Recently i've noticed that this low winter sun gets under the carpark at work and bathes my rear tyre in uv between about 11am and 3pm.

A quick feel of the tyre reveals it's actually quite warm.

Does anyone know if prolonged sunlight and the heat it generates can degrade/harden etc tyre rubber?

Thanks.

Just think of it as a free tyre warmer before you ride home ;)

You could always go out at smoko and rub sunblock on your tyres...just stay away from the tread

You're lucky, the sun down here has no bite at all at the moment.

What, did you get tyres made from second hand vampires?

uv and heat will degrade rubber over a long period of time yes, but like was mentioned you will wear them out before that happens
