LAP TIMER-NOKIA

Post by kaneg »

A few of you are already using your Nokia phones wchich has GPS and a receiver as lap-timer...
Could you please give us (gizmo illiterate people   ) some guidance, keeping in mind that I need another mobile phone like an axe in my back, the only reason I'm looking at it because it's seems like the cheapest and best solution for me. 8)

So, having said all that , which model is the go , is there any one thing to look out for ?
Are there any differences in the receivers? What you want to look out for with them ?
Is evil-bay the go, or somewhere else.

Thanks guys,

Pete :kuda:

I have a nokia E51 at the moment and it runs fine. The screen is a little small, so i suggest something with a larger screen. Any of the Nokia's that run Simbian 60 will be an ok platform to run it off. If you have a laptop, you can download the data and place it into a spreadsheet!

As for the Bluetooth receiver, i highly recomend the.QSTARZ BT-Q818X

They work very well and i can confirm that they will work with the E series nokia's. You will need to conect it to a pc and change some settings, but that is quiet simple!

I also have TomTom running on my phone. Its not to bad if you are happy with a small screen!

The phones are the Expensive bit. E61 retail for about $600 and the E51 for about $330.

There is a bloke in Melbourne that can sell you the complete setup ready to go. Ill try and get back to you with details.

Hope that helps!

Work has just given me a Nokia 6121 that I've discovered can run the Racechrono software and talk to a bluetooth receiver. The phone was only about $280 I think, I've downloaded the Racechrono software, but I've still got to get a receiver

you can get some phones on ebay cheap

http://desc.shop.ebay.com.au/items/_W0Q ... t=0&_rdc=1

I would aviod that bloke from Melbourne if you can, as it costs you about double and all he does is load it onto the phone which can be done in about 3minutes by a 2 year old

GPS = anything 5hz or above + bluetooth capable will work great

I have a couple of these lying around:

One in perfect order. The other, the on/off switch broke and I can't turn it off. I used it to run GPS on my N73.

No longer needed. Make an offer.

This might be what your not after, but i would suggest you get an Apple iPhone! Many people have mixed oppions but i've had mine now for about 8 months and i think its pretty fantastic bit of kit.
I noticed you mentioned you a bit tech "unsaavy" which i reckon is enough reasons to get an iphone, really easy to use, they are 100% touch screen. All the programs on the phone run smoothly and never crash, like they did when i had my N95 nokia. Programs all look really nice and its fun to use.
It has EVERYTHING you would need and doesn't include all the bullshit you wouldn't use like some features of the nokia like, Wireless Bluetooth keyboard networking and some other weirdo useless crap. Has a good lap timer program on the iphone also!

anyway just some food for thought, best idea is goto a phone shop and let them show you all the features you need and have a play with them!

I use the 6120 Nokia basic phone & reliable and plenty of features. The phone needs to be small enough to keep on your person while track riding. The GPS unit is very precise and works well I just use sticky velcro placed it air intake under the speedo. you can also place the on the dash so you can see your current lap times. As the race crono allows you do this plus more. there is a good right up in the trackdaze forum. If you want accurate times you need to use the seperate GPS reciever as it can run at 5Hz so your times are accurate within 0.2 of a second. The phones with GPS I am sure are not that accurate with updating your position.

RaceChrono has been released for Windows Mobile too. I'll be running it at EC on Easter Monday and will report back on the results.
