Head-on motorcycle crash kills rider
* The Age January 8, 2009 - 7:42PM

A man is dead and two people are critically injured after two motorcycles collided head-on on a notorious, windy section of the Maroondah Highway east of Melbourne. The motorcycles collided on a slight bend on the Black Spur at Fernshaw, between Healesville and Narbethong, about 3pm, police said.

A 37-year-old Mooroolbark man died at the scene. His passenger, a 34-year-old Mooroolbark woman, was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The rider of the other motorbike, a man in his 30s from Ivanhoe, was taken to the Maroondah Hospital in a critical condition.

The narrow, winding road passes over the Black Spur, at the top of the Great Dividing Range, through towering mountain ash forest and lush tree ferns in the Yarra Ranges National Park. The road is popular with motorcyclists but notorious among local emergency services because of a high rate of motorcycle accidents.

Major collisions police are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Very sad. Condolances to the families of the accident victims.

I guess it doesn't really matter what speed you put up, people go up there to test themselves out frequently. Though it's not always speed, my friend had a stack on his postie bike the other day, just doing a u-turn in a factory, slipping on the painted concrete, is now in hossy, smashed knee and broken leg just below the knee. He wont be on his feet for at least 3 months. So you just never know do you? My prang was low speed too, 3 months off with a smashed hand. :(

Being an inexperienced rider compared to most of you, those twisties certainly can bring you undone, even for the more experienced.

Be careful all of you up there. We want to see you come down! 8)

Cheers

Only a matter of time as blk spur riders look for another option and give chum creek more of a run :roll: .The last 3 times i have done that road there has been some bike down :roll: I will only do this road during the week now as i dont want to meet up with someone on my side of the road in a panick as they have limited experiance on this road.

The police must have been doing the checks on Chum Ck Rd during the middle of the day - I didn't see them there either at 10:30 this morning or 5:00 this afternoon.. :?

Had a chat to a Paramedic at Healesville, and asked him how many he'd picked up this weekend. He told me that he hadn't picked anyone up, but warned me that the cops where everywhere..
