Oil leak from alternator cover should I let it go?

Post by Paulie »

Hey all

On my search for a replacement ZXR400. I have stumbled across one, it has a few pieces of plastic missing from parts of the fairing but i think a couple of hundred $$ worth of plastic welding will fix it.

BUT.... on the left hand side handle bar end theres a massive scrape-looks like the bike has come down and slid for quiet a way because there is quite allot of metal missing (looks almost as bad the the bar on my zxr after the truck dragged it 4oo metres up the road). Anyways, I had a quick look at the bike, the engine and all looked clean ebnough, supposedly has just had a new timing chain and stuff. BUT i ran my fingers over the Alternator cover and got fresh oil on my fingers...

The alternator cover does have some scrapes and bubbly paint on it

What do we think? Is the handle bar and the leak on the alternator cover a bad sign? I mean the plastics didnt appear to have been broken if an accident had occurred.. seems a bit funny... or am I just being fussy because I am comparing it to my old one (God rest her soul)

Any ideas>

Cheers

well the big test would be taking the alternator cover off. of theres a chunk of metal missing, then "hypothetically" gravel could have gotten in the motor, ergo, BAD. if it was juist a hairline crack just replace the alternator cover and voila!!

not to bring up old wounds, but when madkaw went down on the putty half his insurance claim (or more) went to the fact that the motor had to be torn down (if i understand it correctly) due to a chunk of the alternator/oil pump cover being torn off and allowing 'god knows what" into the engine.

personally id buy sumthin cheap for the time being (if its a commuter/only transport) like a cheap zzr250 or sumthin for the time being (u wont lose too much when u go to sell it if u dont pay that much up front)...and keep looking for a good one...
