And that's my point. Why would you want to spend anywhere between 15 - 20% of your waking hours getting somewhere you don't really want to be.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

10-12 minutes to the station via car or bike, there's no traffic so it makes no difference except it takes less time to get out the door when taking the car. 15-20 minutes if you have to dodge escaped cows (I budget 20 minutes to get to the station otherwise you end up sprinting to the platform). 25 minutes if you encounter a runaway horse and you have a mexican standoff. +65 minutes on the train (I have sleeping soundly down to a fine art). +5 minutes walk at the city end.
Approx 50-75 mins door-to-door on the bike, depending on how late I leave home. The earlier I leave (to or from) the less time I spend dodging cars and lane-splitting. It's 60-odd minutes in the car on the weekend.
It's 86km one-way, 60-odd of freeway, 26km of traffic, the last three or four km actually in the city centre

That's a bit black and white.Glen wrote:... Once you start getting over an hour you really want to love your job because that' a long time commuting.
That means you either limit yourself to finding a job within what, 30 minutes(?) of where you live, or you move house to be closer to where you need to work. Moving house seems more in line with loving your job than traveling a distance.
For me, work is in the city/north sydney - there isn't work for me anywhere else (other than other capitals). Couldn't afford to buy a house any closer than Gosford.
So it's where I need to work and where I can afford to live which then sets my travel time. Nothing to do with loving my work (though I don't hate it).
I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.

If you have no fear, you're not going fast enough.
