It's twins! Gotta luv Ebay

Post by bonester »

Yup bought another GT this week on ebay. Cheap as chips- was going to be a parts bike but it has too much going for it- it's close to roadworthy for one. It has new tyres and aftermarket brakediscs - would cost more than the purchase price of the bike. Lotsa bodgy work by the previous owner to undo- wiring of twisted wires, wrong battery, siliconed carby diaphragms, wires cut in the switchblock, extra wires run for seemingly no reason, etc etc. At least if my main GT dies I have a backup. :D My third GT is a wreck with a different colour engine, so it has been of little use other than some parts.

Guess the twins are one of each gender. 'New' one has a cut front guard and without fairing looks tougher.
Damn I must be slow. Don't get ya joke...duh

Ta mate. Yep I'm getting there. I've got three now, and a friend (who looks after my wreck and bike trailer at her house) also has one. I wonder how many are still out there? I was going to get a GT750 but got a hold of magazine reviews from when the bikes were new, and the reviews said that the 550 was the better bike. :D Better weight distribution, better midrange, etc.
I think they are such an under-rated bike, which is reflected in the values of them. My three cost me $1250 all up! The third one is a piece of shit though. Done nearly 30000km on the regoed one in just over a year. Hard work too- three trips to Newcastle two-up, one of these with the trailer. One trip to Melbourne with trailer (4000km in a week) and lotsa work following bike clients during the year too.:)
There is a paint-faded original GT550 on ebay in Tumut at the mo, and it's just over $1k but hasn't met the reserve.

I think the fairing is a GPZ one. (that's the regoed bike, not the one I got this week) I haven't used the motor coz I'm a bit fussy and the colour difference would bother me. They are also quite different bikes- 83 and 86 models. Different wiring harnesses, CDIs, ignition pickups, clutch switches, wheel/body colour etc, etc. The wreck also needs new inlet manifolds, which would be around $100- guess I could take them off the current engine if I had to though. It was covered in maggots (no shit!) when I bought it. It's still pretty dirty and covered in oil/dirt/grease even though I scrubbed it when I got it. I can't see how anyone could let their bike get like that. :?

Thanks Gos! Think I have enough GTs for now, though. Did 200km on the new one today. Went OK. Pings just as much as the other ones on hills though. :( Apart from a small electrical fault and front brakes with low pads, she's pretty good. Reckon I'll restore this one. :D
