2007 Yamaha R1

It's not too bad, but it sure doesn't look as good as the new Ten. In fact not much does really, from the Japanese anyway.

I think what turned people off the Ten was how different it looked. Everyone had become used to huge oversized headlights, so when it came out with more compact lights it freaked a lot of people out. As always something quite new and different to the old takes time to become accepted.

Plus the new Ten just looks so much smoother than that R1.

Mate stop readin ya bike mags and lookin at the pics in the crapa when ya a bit backed up from to much cheese on ya pizza!

As for you Gos........... I will have you know I was the fastest rider on a Ulysses ride once.....must have been one of the days it was rainin and you didnt come cause ya skirt would get wet

Anyway Stu, you never go on group rides really, they always end up being solo rides

i actually like it, then again i dont mind the current model. BTW i'm not talking so much about looks. when i rode all the litre bikes this year the 10 and the r1 are the 2 i liked the best. the MV was fantastic but i could have a 10 AND and R1 for the price of 1 MV.

it (the 07) looks more like the R7, now i REALLY liked that.

it was my bestest cheesecloth number, brand new and in the rain it would have run like a real biatch

600 is a good step, i just went from my 250 to a 636!! good jump i am more than impressed with the power!

New R1??

IMAGE - it's no good asking me about image, I reckon the E/F series ZX9 look better than any of the current crop of litre bikes - I also quite like the look of the 954 'blade and the 2002 R1 in silver and grey (a ZX12 looks like a block of flats parked beside it).

SUBSTANCE - we've had to put up with ten years of Yamahaha (and Audi) telling us all about the superiority of 5 valve heads - then lo-and-behold they switch back to 4 valve for the 2007 R1. Funny that.

REALITY - buy yourself a 2-3 year old bike and let the first owner take the serious depreciation hit. You can own 2 or 3 nice machines for the price of a single new one.

A mate of mine bought a 01 model R1 today,
Red n black one of the better lookin R1's IMO.

rode one on the weekend, had just over 3000km on it so still fairly new.. i didnt like it much, the lack of torque down low was a mystery considering the 04-05 model kept wanting to see blue skies and was a lot more lively to ride. this new incarnation was a disappointment to ride, while it handled reasonably well and turned into corners quite nicely, i found it hard to get comfortable putting knee to ground, like the seat was too high and further away from the pegs than my GSXR thou K6 is. Coupled with the underseat heat in traffic and the grumbling when asked for more go at low rpm was distinctly annoying.
them dicks at yamaha must have been smoking too many mushrooms.

Considering they only hit the shops a month ago, at least that one's showing signs of being ridden.

Um, to borrow a turn of phrase from RedRoo, 2004 is when they took the R1 and taught to sit down to piss... are you sure you're not comparing the '07 to the 2003-and-earlier, long-stroke models? Those had bottom end while the newer, short-stroke bikes with the underseat pipes have never gone anywhere until 8000rpm.

What goes I've scammed on the '04-onwards R1's, I've always come blown away by the chassis, but totally disappointed by the engine; the bike rode like a massively tuned 600.

the 03 and earlier R1 was more of a nose down bum up than the 04-06 version as my wrists told me, i cant say much about the power having never ridden one out on the open road. i found the 04 to be more comfortable and yes, youre right in saying the chassis is a remarkable piece of engineering, cornering was sharp and precise and the power delivery was smooth and controllable.. however on said road test, due to not being able to hear, and having my eyes on the road instead of the tacho, i got the bike down to (probably) 2nd gear without realising it and opened the throttle on corner exit coming over a slight crest, the resultant wheelie surprised the hell out of me as you can imagine. at the time of testing the 04-05, compared to my ZX9, the R1 was bloody good to ride.
but now, after having ridden several other bikes of varying sizes and then settling on and owning my K6 thou, set up the way i like it (suspension, exhaust, PCIII, etc etc) nothing else comes close. Definitely not this latest generation of the R1 dynasty. you want torque? look elsewhere.
