Car audio problem

Post by diesel »

hey all,
just put a pair of 6 inch splits and a pair of 12 inch subs into my housemates car.
splits are powered by a pissy little amp that came with them (250 watts pmp) and the subs are powered by a 2 channel 400W amp (RMS) putting putting out 4ohms. the subs are dual voice coil, also 4ohms.

ive hooked them up to one channel of the amp using the following diagram.

the problem is they will cut in and out, basically being very temperamental. any hints on what i should do? oh the amp is bridgeable.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Vin
hows the earth on the amps???
also
how big (size) is the power supply cable to the big amp?
symptoms sound like amp clipping
and thats caused by bad earths and maybe insufficent juice

hth
GOTTA LUV the 12R!!

i'm using a 4 gauge pwer lead.
the earth appears to be OK cos the splits are working no probs, but i might just find another spot for that.

can you explain clippings for me?

Connect them in series, the way you have them wired ATM has a resistance of 2 ohms, I am supprised the amp has not blown up!

Vince,

4 ohms divided X 2 voice coils is 2 ohms AC resistance not DC resistance you are reading off a multimeter, the reason the amp is cutting out is caused by the protection circuit, because the impedence is too low, hook them up in series, I.E + to (-)

ok so i wired it according to the second diagram, i get constant noise but at a tiny volume. i can just feel the vibration of the subs.

Mate, feel free to bring it around and I'll take a look.

I used to compete in SPL it's been a while but I'm more than happy to take a look.

Chances are your over driving the amp or something silly. but best to check it out and see what it's doing online diagnosis is jsut a waste of time, esp when your so close by...
