Wheel swap conundrum....*solved*

It was at this point that i realised that the guard dog at the bike shop that diagnosed my trackie had marked my rear slick quite comprehensively.....yuck


A word from the wise, don't try to fit the front wheel back onto the bike while its being propped up by a car jack and some bricks. Cos when you swing on the front axle to slide it home you tip your bike ontop of your long suffering girlfriend.

Thankfully shes okay, and so is the bike, she broke its fall.


It took me all day but its all finished and ready for trackday.


And one last thing....what do you use to remove the front axle?? i don't have a 21mm allen key so i welded this bolt and 2 nuts together so i could use a 21mm socket on it.

That's as good a way as any if you don't have the time or inclination to source a 21mm allen key from a specialised tool store or a friendly fitter and turner (I was donated the allen keys for my bike from a KSRC member here in Melbourne).

Another option is an inhex socket, essentially a 1/2" socket drive 21mm allen-key. You can get these as part of sets from Sidchrome, but they aren't cheap. Sometimes you can find them on eBAY, the set from Sidchrome which contained ones that fit the ZZR (17mm) were circa $70 for five sockets.

I'm pretty sure if you tried one of the bigger tool stores (not Bunnings) they could order you the right size in. Might cost $20-30 though .

Many moons ago when I attempted a similar op, I decided it was easier to drop the forks from the tripple clamps and remove/refit the front wheel away from the unstable bike.

What's happeneing with the old frame/motor - it doesn't look too bad?
