Does the 2021 Ninja 650 LAMS have an immobiliser?

Postby neenjare » Tue May 25, 2021 12:46 pm

Hi all,

Long story short, my 2018 Ninja 400 was stolen a few days ago. The bike was ridden away, found the key chamber (whatever it's called) on the floor where the bike was missing from. I assume this was a 'smash the key in, pull it out, twist the wires' kind of start. No immobiliser fitted to the 400, I gather.

Meanwhile a pair of Hondas which I know both have the HISS immobilisers remain in the parking spots, untouched.

So for my next bike, having an immobiliser is featuring pretty high on the requirements list.

I've searched online and couldn't find the answer. I've spoken to my 3 local dealers and all plainly had no idea, lots of "I think it does", or "I'm pretty sure", all said with a notable lack of confidence :?

Does the 2021 Ninja 650 LAMS have an immobiliser?

Thank all.

I thought most current bikes had an immobiliser.
Did you get a red key with it.?
You need the red key to programme any new keys you cut.
Do you know they rode it away.?

No 'red' key. These are the keys I got...

New keys being cut won't be an issue as I'd be astonished if they recovered the bike in the next week before insurance pays out for a replacement. That said, it never had 'red' keys to start with, so doesn't seem applicable for my bike.

They definitely rode it away, have CCTV footage of them exiting the premises on the bike.

So either they overrode the immobilizer somehow, or it simply didn't have one. It seems the later is more likely.

As to trying to find the answer on if the 2021 Ninja 650 LAMS has an immobilizer, it seems like all my local shops are assuming it has one, and telling customers so, when really they have no idea... as demonstrated by the fact 2 of them were trying to tell me they are "pretty sure" my now stolen bike had one.

Was just asking if your old bike had a red key as that would suggest it had an immobiliser, obviously it didn't.
Ask the dealer if the 600 comes with a red key..
I believe some US models don't, or didn't, have immobilisers but thought most road bikes in Aus do.

A lot of older Kawasakis have a 100 ohm resistor in the ignition barrel - if the CDI doesn't see 100 ohms, no start- in other words you can't cut wires and twist together wthout the resistor. My ignition switch on my ZRX broke 800km from home. I ended up down Jaycar and bought a soldering iron, resistor and a switch to ghetto bypass it to get me home. Maybe thieves are smart enough to do something similar?
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

Unfortunately, no CCTV angle on the bike itself when it was stolen. Couldn't see anything of what they did to get it started, only the fact that they rode it out.

Yep, apparently not.

It seems baffling to me that all bikes aren't fitted with them these days. Stupid even. It would only cost Kawi a handful of extra dollars to add one as standard and would prevent a tonne of thefts (not all, but many).

I'd be most surprised if having an immobiliser isn't a requirement of the ADRs as it is with cars?!

No idea. All I can tell you is that they rode my bike out, and after 2 more calls I'm no closer to a solid answer on the 650 model.

Just more salespeople who "think" it has one.

I'm baffled by it seemingly being impossible to find a dealer that knows the answer.

I mean... It either does or doesn't. It's not that complicated. How hard can it be to check some sales or dealer support resources...

I am surprised. Not an ADR requirement (in WA anyway).

Weird.
