So is there a way to get my overseas Shoei helmet to be tested and certified with AS/NZS 1698 in Aussie?
The dealer where I bought my bike said it can be done and would cost $300.
Anyone else have any information?
Thanks in advance.

+1 absolutely spot on
FWIW..testing to AS standards involves destruction of the tested item
so just buy a newie

a bit more info....

CAMS (the great god of motorsport ) has ...with their latest 2011 Cams manual on motorsport
outlawed from 31/12/2012 ...ALL helmets with SNELL SA95 markings
and SNELL 2000 certified helmets will be downgraded (to be used in lesser forms of motorsport) from 2014

This may hit ANDRA competitors (as CAMS licences ANDRA to run drag racing on its behalf) as well as other
motorsport codes :(

fairly certain that SA95 relates to the standard they applied in 1995 - makes it 15 years old now

who is going to use a 15 year old helmet ?

FWIW - SNELL isnt that crash hot a standard - they have only just started to take into account blunt( crush ) impact like AS and ECE does

Previously SNELL was more concerned with sharp object penetration of the shell

SNELL being an organisation set up for companies to voluntarily conform to its standards relies on its marketing hype to get companies to do so and pay for the privileged of the SNELL standard approval

However in saying this - SNELL is better than DOT ( which is very lame ) -- SNELL is basically the same as how we get AS1698 but SNELL is not a Federal Standard in USA as our AS1698 is

you can still buy new helmets with SNELL AS95 stickers in them
so
for my money you would have to go a helmet with an AS sticker or at least a recent BS or SNELL (2005?) sticker

Smitty, first up CAMS is only car stuff, so doesn't apply to us on motorbikes :P

Second up is this from November:
Schedule D – Helmet Standards/Moratorium
Snell has introduced several new helmet standards that need to be introduced into Schedule D as soon as possible.

It was proposed that the oldest of the standards, Snell SA95, be phased out from 31/12/2012. Some amendments are proposed to the moratoriums to align with the full implementation of the revised Schedule D from 1 January 2011, and to maintain the agreed 2 year notice situation of any changes to requirements.

The Board RESOLVED to APPROVE the amendments proposed to Schedule D of the NCR.

Please Note: The above changes will not come into effect until a CAMS Bulletin detailing the changes has been published.

...and it hasn't been published yet http://www.ggg.com.au/clients/click.asp?versionID=803&name=bulletins-regulations&pg=http://www.cams.com.au/Sport/Bulletins_and_Regulations.aspx

So there's a little while before any four wheeler's need to have their new helmets. Not to mention the way I understand it, there wouldn't be an SA95 sticker on anything manufactured from 2005 onwards, so you'd already be buying a 5 year old helmet if you got one "new".

as I understand it, Motorcycling Australia has a licence from CAMS for motorcycle events (the same way ANDRA does for drag racing)

Yet there's no mention of MA on the CAMS site (unlike ANDRA who are part of the CAMS organisation structure) and no mention of CAMS on the MA site. A strange omission if they are issuing them a licence don't you think?

Also why is there no mention of CAMS in the MOMS if they are so important? FIM (International Motorcycling Federation) gets a big mention as MA are their Australian affiliate.

CAMS however operate under the FIA, which is for four-wheeled motorsport.

Of course none of that even takes in to account AASA

So if Ross comes over with a non cams approved helmet does that mean he will disqualified from the MotoGP this year.

Just curious that is all.

No because the sanctioning body accepts a variety of standards for racing

In Australia it is illegal to use on the road a non AS1698 helmet

It is also illegal to sell/hire/lease a non AS1698 helmet in trade or commerce - because helmets have the mandatory standard thus commercial importers must ensure that the products meet the minimum required standard as specified in section 65c of the trade practices act 1974

All my lids are either Snell or DOT, the road surface overseas is not harder or softer than ours, if its good enough to wear in a WSBK or Motogp race is good enough for me...

NZ should have there own standard cause they use the molten rock to make rds which is harder than tar... Own a Tire business over there and you would make a killing their rds rip through motorcycle tyres
