Helmet Age

Postby tim » Thu Dec 31, 2020 6:39 pm

Hi All,
I'm getting back into riding after years off. What's the deal with helmet lifespan?

I've got an awesome Shoei XR1100 that still fits perfectly. I brought it new, never been dropped, been stored well in a cool dry cupboard in the helmet bag, been off the bike for around 7 years it hasn't had much use. It does have the SAI Global Australian Standard Silver and Red "tick" sticker.

Can't see any mention of the age of a helmet here:
https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au ... lmets.html

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

I usually do about 5 years with a helmet, but it also depends on the linings, and how many times I may have dropped it.
For most helmets you can get new linings.
Yours seems to be in good nick still. Keep it.

They recommend 5 years but I go longer, if the helmet is any good.. Unlike the Rjays I bought 3 years ago, the liner is wearing away and I'm on the look out for a new helmet already...
