WTB - 1978 Z1-R Carb float bowl
Need a carb float bowl for No3 - broke the drain screw when trying to set up fuel levels (sucker was well seized in there!)
Had to drill and tap to a standard 1mm pitch thread to get going again - nil 0.75 mm tap available, so now have no easy way to check fuel level on this carb!
Drop me a line at ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Sooooo - mechanic checked the valve timing and that shot that theory to the shithouse! (all timing was good)
Next thought was that the carbs "must" be the problem; luckily another z1000 was in for some surgery and we pulled the carbs off this bike and put them straight on mine and it ran fine!!!

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Thanks for all the kind words guys!
I may have mentioned an ongoing overly-rich running at low throttle openings problem?
Well after much research and fiddling with carbs I finally got the shits and said "Ok that's it - you're going to the doctor!"
(I could be fucking around for weeks and still ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Assembly complete!
After only 4 years and 9 months (and a bit) the Z1-R rebuild is now done.
Had a lot of fiddling and farting around with the headlamp, fairing, instruments as I couldn't get some of the dampers/grommets and had to make my own. Also after fitting/refitting fairing several times ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Anyway that was Saturday, Sunday was a "rest day" (went out for the day with the better half.)
Monday being PHol was back into it - off with carbs, on with the aircleaner ass'y and back on with the carbs.
Sounds easy but it ain't - not for this little black duck anyway!
It's a real shit of a job ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Was hoping to complete the rebuild over the long weekend and tried hard to do so.
However, not to be - got the bike back from the bike shop on Friday PM after parting with a few $AUST and the story was good.
The carb setup and timing all checked out ok, no issues there.
Some smoke out the exhaust ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Got starter clutch re-assembled and re-fitted to the bike.
Was gonna take it to the bike shop to see if they could sort out the carb/?? problem.
But thought I'd try another brand new set of NGK B8ES plugs just to satisfy myself.
Fitted new plugs, fuel on, ign on, clutch in and hit the starter ...

Re: Z1-R Aftermarket Exhausts
Hey there KZ,
Glad to hear another Z1-R is being returned from the grave - as mine has.
I'll be running 98 octane - only the best, none of that cheap shitty stuff (mind you a lot of the different brands come from the same tanker, I've noticed!)
Paintwork was done locally here in Nowra, the painter ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Hope to get 'er flashed up this weekend.
Rebuilt the starter motor clutch with new high tensile bolts, dowel pin, rollers, pins and springs.
(see pic of old Vs new bits - no wonder it made a racket, with the bolts and dowel pin rattling around!)
This must've been done by whoever rebuilt the motor ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Hey Wiggy,
I have fired it up just recently, but haven't been able to cure an overly rich mixture problem (all throttle settings and idle).
Think I'm on the money with float levels too high - tried everything else!
Sound report .....the bike has a nice throaty rumble when it does decide to idle ...

Re: Z1-R Rebuild
Got the o-rings I needed for the fuel pipes from local engineering spares firm - 7mm (id) x 11mm (od) and re-assembled the carbs (again!)
Set up the synchronisation using the wire gauge method - now ready to fit to bike (again!)
Luckily I decided to leave all the aircleaner & silencer hardware off ...

KSRC Member - Articles in OBA
G'day all, Just blowing my own trumpet here - I've submitted a cupla articles to Jim Scaysbrook's worthy bike mag - OBA - and he has seen fit to publish them. First one was in OBA #53 (still available thru back issues) and featured the NZ Marlboro Series back in the 70s, second article was in #57 ...
