OK, I was quite confident that the carbies were the problem; and they were. I took the f*&^ers out and replaced them with some used ones from a '07 GPX.
Now she starts first time without choke (needs a little choke to idle when cold), revs are responding perfectly and no problems with power. Better ...

Re: GPX 250 issue
OK, So I have more updates on this. One of the vacuum diaphragms in the carbs had a small tear in it, so I replaced both of those. She then sounded like she wanted to kick over, but didnt have the battery power to do it.
So I went and got the battery charged up today, and still wouldn't start. So ...

Re: Ye Old Fuel Tank Puncture
my gpx used to leak fuel. the previous owner took it to the mecanic, who didnt want to remove the fairing for fear of making it worse. so i bought the bike, and removed the fairing. turns out it wasnt coming from the bolt hole as suspected, but from underneath the tank where it sits on the frame of ...

Re: GPX 250 issue
did your problem prevent the bike from starting though? and do the carbs need to be in the bike to be synced? i am unfamiliar with the process.

Re: GPX 250 issue
OK I attempted to take the plugs out again, which failed as I could only get one out for some reason, so I didn't compression test either. The one plug I did get out didn't smell petrolly at all, 'twas slightly oily though.

Re: GPX 250 issue
What would being able to smell the fuel prove? that fuel is getting into the engine? I'm taking the spark plugs out again today to do a compression test, ill give em a sniff and the plugs a spark as well.

Re: GPX 250 issue
I have some more updates on this;
I finally got the bike down here (Melbourne) and she still wasn't starting. I asked my dad to try and kick it over before it got shipped and he said he couldn't get it started either. So I got right into it, and took the carbies out and took them apart. As we had ...

Re: GPX 250 issue
OK So, I didn't end up taking the carbs out/apart. I replaced the spark plugs, the old ones were petroly and burnt out black. I thought the choke might be playing up so I disconnected the cable from the carbies and voila, hello idle! However, as you know, all good things must come to an end, and it ...

Thanks a lot for all the advice everyone, much appreciated.
Planning to once again take the carbies out again tomorrow and clean, as well as change the spark plugs. Hopefully all goes well
