Not going again..if you know ZZR 250's then please HELP!

Well well well, what a week it was last week. Finally got my bike back from the mechanics...all going. Then that night I skipped my a lesson in Hydraulics at Tafe so I could get the lovely multicoloured fairings on. I was going to leave it a naked bike but decided against it. It took a bit of work to get the fairings and headlight on as the bike I brought didn't have the brackets for the fairings as my mate hadn't got around to getting off his lazy ass to find them, so LUCKY last weekend I brought another ZZR250 (94 model) from melbourne for $600 (this is where I got the multicoloured fairings from. I have got a new set of fairings but they are getting set aside to be painted soon hopefully. Also the multicoloured fairing off the 94 model were plastic welded so I decided it would be wise to use them first as I am probably likly to drop the bike at some stage).
Anyway I was also racing around last week to get all my gear, brought a Shoei helmut (black), black Nordic Dri-rider, black rain pants and am STILL waiting for my gloves to come in. Got a pretty good deal on it all.
So last thursday I ride my bike down to the closest place for a blue slip (NSW roadworthy for a bike or car that has been unregistered for some time, then you have to get a pink slip every year for roadworthiness), so anyway I ride it down there and guess what.....IT START TO BLOODY RAIN!!!!!!!!, lovely, and just as i'm turning the first corner the bike is fighting me a shitload and doesn't want to lean into the corner. i finally just manage to get it around....JUST.... and unclench my butthole from the seat only then to remember that the bike had been sitting for a couple of years and the tyres were half flat....so I keep riding and slowly get to the roadworthy joint and a stroke of luck they decide to do the roadworthy right there on the spot, so I thought yeah I might have it registered this afternoon.....but as it turns out it was not to be....the engine number is in a prick of a spot and they couldn't see it properly so they decide to finish it on friday... .
The next day (Friday) I don't hear a word from them and finally call them about 1/2 an hour before i finish work and they said it was all good....I was getting excited as i wanted to go for a ride this weekend.
When I turn up there they say that they still have to check the lights and that they can't get it started....i inwardly moan.... then I go out the back and try to start it, sure enough it just clicks at me, the battery is good but it just won't crank. So I decide to sit on it and get ready to start swearing and try to coax it into starting only to discover that when I stood the bike up FUEL PISSED OUT OF THE AIRBOX! I let it all drain out and then check the hoses on the tank and check the fuel tap...anyway it seemed all fine so I thought well why not still try to start it....this time it decides to crank over.....ONCE!....It made a very wierd noise and the mechanic advised me that I shouldn't try it again as he thinks it sounded like a hydraulic lock in the cylinder . So I decide to not tempt it and leave it alone, went to my brother in-laws, got his trailer and took it back to the motorcycle mechanics.
I am hoping to the powers that be that it is alright. The mechanic said he will have it all fixed by tuesday arvo....providing nothing is bent.

So I would like everyone to keep there body parts crossed for me please and hope that it is alright . All i can do is sit and wait and wear my gear whilst watching TV now and if worst comes to worst i could be putting in the spare motor. I have come close to giving up and just buying another car but then I look at myself in the mirror with my helmut, dri-rider and Bonds boxers and think....Damn I hope i turned off that webcam ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Anyway if you got all this way through my story then I seriously think you could use your spare time a bit more appropriatly like washing your bike or buying new parts for it. .

good luck mate, reminds me of the fun i went through when i fixed up my first car from a rolling chassis & a writeoff. Biggest headache, but it got me on the road. However i hope your story is different in that it can get fixed & remains RELIABLE.

If ever you think it's not worth it, think if you had bought a new one and how much you would have lost after the initial purchase and then you probably would have dropped it as well.

I think your doin a grand job just keep goin.

Remember my first bike OMG.

Lets just say, you gotta love 2 stokes(how many ring and piston changes),
but hey when you have dramas to start with it gives you good practise on the maintenance side

YEEHAA....Bike is finally going and on the road. It turns out that the idiots at the roadworthy place must've played around with it and caused the problem...somehow. The motorcycle mechanic said that everything was fine with the carbies and fuel tap...so who knows.

The good thing about it is that it is now all going and on the road so i'm looking forward to lots of ridings and hopefully a few trips.

A quick basic check up of your baby(Oil,air in tyres,Fuel,lights etc etc) before and after each long ride,will keep it going for a long long time.

Had a closer look at your thread, it seems that the r/worthy guys must have been trying to start your bike, perhaps with full choke and twisting the throttle heaps ? which has then caused (a) flat battery and (b) flooded motor. Guaranteed combination to cause problems. I am only guessing, but it would fit the problems as you have deccribed.

Well the bike is going back to the shop AGAIN.

I am wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with a ZZR just leaking out all it's fuel. Mine has just leaked out half a tank of fuel on my garage floor through the airbox. Now I know that the fuel is vacuum fed to the carbies and the vacuum opens a diaphragm (i think) and lets the fuel in but when I have it sitting there (turned off) it just keeps on feeding the carbies fuel and then floods it and then filles the airbox and comes out of that. Now I have noticed that when I have been riding or put fuel in the tank the tank makes a wierd noise near the filler cap like its releasing air through a tiny hole. Could this mean that the breather line is blocked thus pressurising the tank and forcing the diaphragm to opens and pour out the fuel????? I am dumbfounded and I am taking it back into the bike shop again tommorrow. I just thought I would ask people on here if they have ever experienced anything like this before.

Anyway any help or information that people have would be greatly appreciated.

simple, it sounds like one (or both) of your carbies has a clogged "float valve" what this means is that the little float that is there to close the valve when there's enough head of fuel, isn't closing off, and your getting a continual head of fuel forcing its way through the carbies.

The fix could be as simple as trying to drain the float bowls and flush any crap out of them, or maybe some fuel has gummed up on the needle. Or more likely they could be work down and no longer seal

Oh and as well as that, your vacuum switch on your tank isnt helping things at all.

Relax, the fix should be under a hundred, by a long way... that is unless they decide you needed your carbies stripped and cleaned, which given the circumstance, might not be a half bad idea.

Yep, sounds like 1 or both of the 'needle and seat' assemblies are not doing the job properly - the floats in the carbie bowls close the needle/seat when the float bowl is full. As Mike has indicated, if they 'jam' open due to some crappy dirty fuel, then they just allow fuel to flow into the bowls, up, and into the airbox ( if the level of the airbox is lower than the level of the inlet manifold / valves.)

Do you have a 'prime' position on the fuel tap ? It sounds like you do, and in this position, the fuel tap will flow fuel without the engine running. In normal 'On' or 'Res' position, the vacumn on the tap needs to be working for the fuel to be drawn from the tank to the carbies. Check the fuel tap position.

Does your tank have a breather line ? Most tanks have the breather built into the tank cap, I am surprised you hear a noise when filling the tank, because with the cap open, there should be no pressure build-up in the tank at all. When riding ( with the cap closed), you may hear a slight hissing on a hot day with a full tank, as fuel expands when hot - the pressure is just being released from the cap - this is a Good Thing.

might be some tips in here that could be useful - see how you go tomorrow, and don't let them rip you off for a 'full-rebuild' of your carbies - mate it takes about 15 minutes to drop the bowls, clean and/or replace the needle/seat combo, and blow it all clean with an air-duster.

Gosling1 is correct. . U r lucky that it leaked in yur garage. I had mine leaking at a servo, and the fire brigade was called in to stop the leak. The bike got towed to my mechanic eventually. Costed me more than $300 to fix it, airbox + engine was flooded with petrol. The farking PRIME position was the culprit, I wonder why they make them(PRIME pos) at all.
