top triple clamp

Thu Aug 18, 2005 4:47 pm

Im trying to get the top triple clamp off my 95 ZX6R for polishing

I have undone all screws etc and it moves up but gets stuck on the ignition unit underneath. The ignition is connected to the triple clamp by what looks like screws but the have no head on them to undo.

The zx7 barrel has 2 mounting shafts the the barrel slides onto up into the top clamp. These shafts are then 'rounded off' on the heads. This is so the ignition barrel can not be taken out and the bike pushed away by some thieving scum.

Most bikes still have the so called 2 secrurity bolts holding the barrel in....but you can buy the socket set to undo them anywhere. If the heads on yours look like their rounded off.....you might have to leave it in while it gets polished.

Grab a punch and centre punch the head of the bolt. So you can drill into it.

Drill into it and then use an 'easy out' stud remover, should come out fairly easy. The easy out is lightly hammered into the hole you have drilled, so the hole needs to be slightly smaller than the easy out.
Don't forget to try and lube the thread with WD40, or something like it.

If you can cut a groove large enough for a screwdriver into the head, then that's another way.

MMmmm I'd be careful because if it is part of the moulded top clamp that the slides onto and it isn't a bolt you could have more trouble because then you'd have to tap it and get some bolts to hold the barrel back in place.

If it is 2 bolts then your laughing but make sure you have all the tools or it'll turn into a nightmare of giant proportions.

I agree with up2nogood, use easy out and some lube. Then replace with secrurity bolts.
