Sounds like cam chain...between 3-4.5k RPM
Could it be the tensioner?
Seems to only have happened, or at least I have only noticed it since my last oil change. Bike did sit around for quite a few weeks with not much use.
Runs ok, though.
Ideas? and is it a problem to be worried about?
This on the ER...

Normally a tensioner is very easy to fix, about a twenty minute job depending on the car/bike and how hard it is to get to.
Definitely worth the fix as they're generally a pretty cheap part!

Gawd...how do I describe it?
Sorta bag of marbly, or something, but not really tappety-tappeta (?)...it makes a noise while revs increase, and it either disappears or I can't hear it once the revs go past around 4.5krpm...performance seems ok...I was going to pull the tensioner out and have a look, but it needs a gasket, or at least some gasket paper...
But as happens, I don't even know if there is anything to worry about. I will be taking it into a shop sometime soon anyhow when I do the single seat thing, might get them to have a look at a few things while it is in.

Might be clutch basket rattle or primary chain rattle- common Yamaha rattles- had a mate with an FJ1200 with those problems.....never fixed them and sold the bike with nearly 200000km on it.....

Put a loud pipe on it and all your troubles will go away....

I know this will sound like a stupid question but what condition is your chain in?...the one to the rear wheel, not the timing one. A mate stuffed around for ages looking for a rattle in the engine that ended up being his stuffed chain.

I think it's ok, but probably time to set the slack again and all that...anyhow, time for coffee, then I am heading up to the coast

in the car, though

While I moved the car out of the way, I revved the motor a bit, took it up to 3 or 4 krpm and motor sounded, well ok. Maybe I should check the drive chain tension before I muck about with anything else...good tip Mick C

Well it does seem quieter now that I have adjusted the drive chain...

WHOA!! Ive got the same issue on my ZX6R (03)...
About 6 months ago I started getting a light noise mostly when idling... Took it to a mechanic who said that "Kawasakis are just noisy"....
But its really bugging me. and its gotten a bit louder, or perhaps I am noticing it more.....
So I sent it in for a major service... but no change...
and I wouldnt have a clue where to find the thingemywhatsit chain...

So felix... WAS it the tensioner?

There is a bit of tensioner noise...isn't that bad really. You have to remember you are sitting directly over the engine, so that always seems to make it sound a bit worse. You can hear the timing chain as the tensioner floats in between settings, if that makes sense. Once it tightens up, the timing chain noise is gone.
Most of the weird noise I had was from too much slack in the drive chain (between gearbox and rear wheel). Supposed to have 35-40mm of slack, I had, err, 50mm, maybe slightly more

Seems much better now.
The XJ on the other hand, makes no such noise

My CBR600F3 with 20,000 more on the clock wasnt anywhere near as noisey....
Anyone in my local (melbourne, Richmond area) with a ZX6R around 25k on the clock that I can compare to? Its freaking me out...
