How to beat a rotary in a race? Race it twice! The rotary will only last one go...

Pitty that statement is somewhat true, thats why I never developed my first car, damn expensive to repair and finding someone who actually wanted to fix it and do a good job was impossible.

one of my mates had this problem with his RX3 Marzzzdar
(like Moff used to say)
did it up..ran it hard in a ...well you know, down the road ;)
and the rotary went bang at about 10,000rpm
so
he went aaaahhh phharkk it
went and stuck a supercharged Transam 302 Ford V8 engine in it
til he twisted the chassis big time at Calder ..engine and trans went into a
RX4 which he eventually sold..the cops were giving him grief about the 'bugcatcher' sticking up thru the bonnet

those WERE the days

Mate of mine used to work at Graeme Withers speed shop on sundays . Would sit in with him and check out the visitors . What some guys would build . Guy named Gary who worked there had a blown A9X street reg . Thing had a low battery and the cops pulled him over for a check . Told him to shut it down . After the check , and drool , the cops had to push start it for him . What a photo opportunity missed .
My first car was a 4 dr LC . Not up to Smittys standard but fun car .
Ummmm let me see

I had an opportunity to buy a white mint A9X of a work mate, spewin now I didn't, had the original hatch-hutch and all for $7k in 1987, I would have trashed it anyway at that time. Silly me went and got the Cobra, still that thing went well after getting Mick Webb to weave his magic over the crusty Cleveland.
A mate had a LJ for a while, I liked that car, 186 engine went good, he then sold it for a hot SLR5000 308 blued/bal. Lethal is all I can say about that one, tyre technology was shit then too, he had those Goodyear TA's on, it was like driving on ice in the wet.

Ah yes the amount of money spent on cars, could have had a decent deposit for a house. Never got the money back of course.

Goodyear really had a reputation for tyres..not!
The Polyglas I had on the Monaro had no traction in the wet
and just a bit in the dry..and it did not improve when they released TA's
mind you
I have only ever found one worse tyre
the standard (red wall 8) ) things on the Monaro provided by GMH
...Dunlop Aquajets. Flatten the throttle at 100mph in 4th gear
and it would spin the rear wheels
The only good thing about Aquajets is that they lasted only about 5000 miles
and you had to get new tyres..not Dunlops though.
and
I still shudder to think that GMH released the first XU1s on crossplys

how times have changed

I am so glad they updated the Q to have "power discs" imprinted on the brake pedal.

discs were an extra cost option and that included the sticker on the pedal rubber

Memories come flooding back.

I remember being an 8 yo in the back of my old mans HK Premier with the 307 and Powerglide and doing a full 360 on the Great Western Hwy at Emu plains after a bit of an emergency brake.

After that he had a HG 308 with the Trimatic and we did Sydney to Bourke in 8 hours with the cross ply tyres and a boot full of fuel in 4 Gallon drums thanks to a Petrol shortage due to a strike at the time. I think he scored discs on that one though, so obviously much safer.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

aaaahh, memories indeed. On my first rig, the HT GTS Munro, I could not wait until it had Speedie rims ( 8" chrome horrors, Hurricane's ??), but fitted with every boy-racers wet-dream at the time - 245/50 series T/A Radials YEH baby, with the writing on the OUTSIDE if ya don't mind Mr Tyre bloke !!

and they were absolute shite in the wet :D - wish I had a photo of that old rig, it broke a rocker-arm in 2 when I was racing a mate in a V6 Capri ( now that thing went like the clappers), and it all went downhill from there......sob

That's a myth conjured by people who have no inkling on how a rotary operates etc.

As for pulling your pud, I'll try and run into the R1 rider again so he can explain to you the scraps on his jaw from hitting the ground

I tend to agree that Rotary's being unreliable is from Piss poor maintenance, piss poor engine building or excessive flogging the tits off it.

Does anybody remember the RX7's winning the Bathurst 24hr races?
Wasn't the PP Rotary banned from racing in some classes?
How well the quad rotor race car went @ LeMans?
I appreciate anything that's fast, be it Turbo/Supercharged, EFI, Rotor, 4,6 or 8. It's all about how much $$$$$$$ you got to spend.

As for the Optimax, I run it ALL the time in my 03 636 as that's all Roma has in 98 Octane.
We run it in the GF's 97 200SX, without hassles & on current low boost it makes around 170rwkw's without hassles.
I have read articles where the same car has made slightly more HP on
BP Ulitmate than Optimax(Redcliffe Dyno's Turbo XR6 i think it was?)
In the end I use whatever 98 I can get my hands on, but if I have the opportunity to use BP instead I do. Maybe it runs better, maybe it doesn't?

Mate has LX 2 door Torana with 304 that he runs on Optimax ALL the time, it's been slightly tuned for it & made about 390HP@treads in Toowoomba on Dyno. He was happy & it didn't ping.

As for Methyl Benzene/Toluene, well it's the great stuff Speed shops sell for about $50-$80? for 20L that racers have been mixing with there home brew race fuels for years.

It's a GREAT Anti knock/Detonation Prevention additive & I have even used it a few years ago in my Turbo Capri as all we had here was std Unleaded 91? I know it's a really bad Carcinagenic? But I didn't spill that much over me & only inhaled it in small quanities, so it was all good!

Toluene is used as an octane booster in fuel, as a solvent in paints, paint thinners, chemical reactions, rubber, printing, adhesives, lacquers, leather tanning, disinfectants, and to produce phenol and TNT. It is also used as a raw material for toluene diisocyanate, which is used in the manufacture of polyurethane foams.
