Not so much the exemption fee, but wtf are they doing exempting current p platers by default? They should be exempt only under the same circumstancers as the next-gen of drivers *OR* if they have already purchased a car before the legislation takes place. If they don't put in an application and a grace period (3-4 months sounds fair) lapses, they would be up the shit for driving outside of their license class.

- The P-plate rules will ban drivers from using high-powered cars.
- Drivers who need powerful cars for work, or rural drivers, will have to pay $23 for an exemption.
- Existing P-platers are exempt from the rules.
- Passenger restrictions for drivers who commit serious offences.

I think that was the logic the NSW gov used.

I imagine Smitty it's the labourers who are up in arms (or farmers) saying the need a big V8 to tow their work materials (or beer slabs).

If you ask me towing is better done with a diesel anyway, so what's the real reason?

Why didn't they go for a power to weight restriction? Too complicated for them? I think we've got 125kW/tonne and 3.5L/tonne as our restrictions on cars. Mind you, those figures still mean it's legal to drive a WRX on your P plates: 121kW/tonne. And Victoria doesn't care what you drive on your L plates, because you're under supervision.

or like a lotta places i know in sydney, the work car is also a bit of a showboat. There's a number of XR6 turbo's & xr8 ute's (to use one model pair as an eample) being used for various work cars, i can think of a glazier in particular that has a few of them, same goes for some fitness places & plasterer's (bah i know i screwed that up).

mate i agree with wot there doin, tho i also agree with most comments on here...tho, wow, $23 and i can drive a 4000hp v8 cos i paid an extra $23...thats gunna hurt, thats at least 1/2 a tank worth of fuel...guess ill have to sit out one friday nite cruise...
