ZX6 J1 Clutch Cable...

Well coming home form a job interview, i notice the 'ol clutch feels funny and isn't springing back..

turns out I have 2 main segments holding it on, the rest have freighed...
So at a guess.. 2 days riding would be my limit of risk..

Had to cut away the freighed bits of cable because they wouldn't let me adjust it at all, and nearly dropped the bike twice trying to test whether it had enough pull... *sighs*

Anyway, anyone have any idea what I'm up for for a new clutch cable???
do i need the entire cable or would I just be buying the core?

Bearing in mind money is tight, and I have to use the bike for commuting.. So if I start the job one night, I have to be able to ride it to work the next day.

Talk to a wreckers, you might be able to get one cheap (i.e. 10-20) if on the cheap sounds the way. Otherwise it'd be a $30-60 part. I'd recommend replacing inner & outer at once unless you just want a hack to get you to/from work until you can replace teh whole thing. In which case you might be able to hook something (very dodgy) up with the old end lugs and a bit of multistrand steel cable from a pushbike shop. (as i said, VERY dodgy)

I believe its the same as the zx9 one and they cost about $25 to $30 brand new. Don't risk getting one from a wreckers as you won't save much and it may have a similar problem.. I found that from experience..

I did mine about a year ago. Got a non genuine new complete cable from my local shop for $32.

is it a tough job to do? j/w

I just bought a complete GENUINE speedo cable for the GPx...
$22 inc GST....
so i reckon a clutch cable won't be much more...

Nah. With no idea what I was doing to start with I knocked it over in a bit less than a hour. You have to take off the right faring to rout the cable. Both ends go in via standard keyway type attachment (turn the cable to slot and pull through). Once the new cable is on use the adjustment at either end to get the slack right and you're on your way again.

the cheats way is to loosen the end holddown points on the current cable, *FIRMLY* tape the new cable to the old one and make sure the ends wont catch on anything, then proceed to pull the new cable through.

And if you do it that way you dont have to take any fairings off

i like mike's way!!! i'll keep that one in mind if i ever need to do it!
what a great site, eh?!

oh and another tip. make sure you put the cable in the right way around. nothing makes you feel like a tosser like pulling the cable through, cussing and swearing as you jiggle it htrough and then realising that you don't have it the right way around.


note, i've neer done it, but the thought occured to me then and i cringed.
