Rear mudguard extensions.... gone

Changes to Australian Design Rules benefit manufacturers, consumers.

Ungainly rear mud guard extensions, such as the unit on Yamaha's MT-09, are set to be phased out.

Motorcycle manufacturers are set to save millions, and riders are less likely to be fined for customising their bikes under changes to the Australian Design Rules.

Australia-specific requirements surrounding rear mud guards have been abolished. Until now, new motorcycles had to be retrofitted with large, unsightly mud guards that extended beyond the rear wheel.

Many riders removed them, and some have been fined as a result. Australia-specific motorcycle design rules cost more than $14 million to implement each year.

A joint media statement issued by Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs and Parliamentary Secretary Josh Frydenberg says the mudguard requirement was "outdated and has no bearing on vehicle safety".

"This change is expected to deliver $14.4 million in industry compliance and manufacturing savings every year, which should lead to lower prices for new motorcycle owners," it says.

"Consumers in Australia will finally have access to motorcycles as originally designed by the manufacturers, bringing Australia into line with other major markets including the European Union and Japan."

.. can i say hooray!

Is this National, or a State thing? When does it come into effect?

Anyone know if this has come into effect, legally? Where would one find the relevant evidence to wave at an enterprising boy in blue?

It's National as it's a change to the ADR's (Australian Design Rules)

Do a google search for Australian Design rules. Then you can print it off and keep it under your seat. It has saved a mate of mine a few fines down here in Vic. He modded his R1 engined FZ1 and made sure all his mods were compliant with ADR's.

Which ADR guidline covers this issue?, had a search but for the life of me could not find the one that relates to this? or does it come under the "ADR Harmonisation' with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulations?

It says here that:
The Australian Government is getting on with abolishing unnecessary red and green tape by today {15 Sept} approving the removal of the requirement to modify rear mudguards on new motorcycles to meet unique Australian rules.

I have no idea if "... by today abolishing..." means that the rule is no longer enforceable from today, but you've got to think that

From what I can gather, you still need a rear reflector though
