new but old topic [ kleen air mod ]

Tue Aug 13, 2013 6:55 pm

While i have the bike apart to fix the miss i was concidering the kleen air mod. After looking at the diagrams instructions and photos all i can really see is that the venting just goes from the cam cover reeds back to the crankcse as the 2 inlets into the air frame need to be blocked, therefore not really venting anything but more like a recirculation. An open end to this circut is required to actualy vent somewhere, have i missed something or what ? The only reason i am conciderin doing this is for more service access under the hood getting rid of the pump.I know many people have done it so why cant i see it ? If it is truly only recirculation what effect does it have on crank case pressure

It sucks air from airbox and adds it to exhaust.
Block that shit off for less popping and burbling

do the reeds open in above the exhaust vaulves as i can see no other way into the exhaust using the exiting gas to suck open the reeds and draw vapor from the crank case if this is how it works i have been looking at the vapor flow backwards

I think so?
Not sure on the inner workings of the head. But kleen air goes in and leans out the exhaust gasses

Dave Potter made a great bible for the a1 12's all the info is here.

I have got this in IE favorites but i dont have tech info on how the system actually operates. I like to know the tech on how things operate i find it makes every thing so much easier when you can understand it

Ok , this is the only way I can explain it ... the kleen air works under the ram air system ....once there is enough ram pressure (from the intake) that valve will open to give fresh air through the exhaust system , hence cleaning any unburnt fuel out of the exhaust system .

PS what I did was get a set of blockoff plates but my bike needs a resister as the ecu runs the show with the clean air. I don't like the crank vac mod...but that's just me.

what you said is all well and good but its still guess work dave potters work has the crank vent running to the reed couplings and both air frame couplings blocked without going through induction proscess how does this vent the case or get into the exhaust . it must go somewhere or the case would just pressureise :?

Yeah ditto, blocked mine off, didn't worry about plumbing into the crank case vent

Not related to the ram air.

To understand it you need to think of what happens in the exhaust port. The valve opens and the entire mass of burned(ing) gas charges out of the cylinder down the pipe. The valve then shuts, but the mass of gas is still rushing down the pipe causes a slight vacuum in the port. This is when the reeds open (till now the pressure has kept them firmly shut) and bleed in some fresh air from the airbox. This is done to provide extra oxygen to let the last remaining hydrocarbons burn up, so reducing emissions.

so you are saying the air gets into the exhaust directly therefore the port itself must have 3 entrances or exit 1 the exhaust valve 2 the actual exhaust port or header pipe and another that flows in from the reeds opening into the port is this correct if so i can understand. I am used to exhaust through valve out through hedder ( 2 holes only ) breather into airbox and burn of vapours in combustion proscess

Hmm , makes total sense to me :kuda:
I always thought it worked as a cruise mode style thing ? manifold vac activated the valve or the ecu in the latter models buy throttle position so when at low TP in cruise mode it was activated ... hence using ram pressure + low exhaust pressure to make it work . Never really looked into it to be honest , thanks for the input :kuda:

When you get dyno'd they always block crimp the hose to get an accurate mixture reading. Unless of course you already have it blocked

Yep good for a few things but bad if you love that crackle, burble sound, which I do
