2 Stroke Spares & Tools

Tue Oct 02, 2012 3:05 pm

Learning the hard way I am starting to collect a stash of spares that i have in a flat pouch on the back of the WR or in the camelback if they are light.
Being a 2 stroke top of the list is two spare plugs & a light weight flat plug spanner, basic tools for a tube change, pliers wire & cable ties.
The latest I have added to the list is some high quality 3mm thick 470 KG breaking strain double braid rope (similar to climbing rope) that has next to no stretch & has a high melting temp of 140 deg c
After getting a tow the other day I have learnt how valuable it is to carry some suitable rope & takes up next to no room.
For longer trips I will have a look at an MSR bottle for an extra ltr of fuel that can be strapped to the front fender (has a V groove on the top) for emergencies, it turns out that my reserve is only good for less than 1Km
which is not far at all :(
Any other suggestions for the basics?

Ride with a friend or 2.

Go faster! Then if you run out of fuel, you can roll a bit further.
Fuel consumption sux even more when going slow, keep the speeds up

The other day I had a few 4 stroke bikes available to pinch fuel from but no pre mix oil, did not want to risk running straight unleaded, so in theory I could carry some 2T oil & a bottle to transfer from the doner bike would help, its easier than removing the tank :D
Mid week rides make it hard to organise others to ride with but as a general rule of thumb I ride with at least 1 other on weekends etc.

Can you fit a 4-stroke in that tool kit?

Hahaha a shit stir yes :D

2-Strokes and me don't agree, to much mechanical sympathy & not enough revs just do not work well together.

i always kept some premix in a well sealed bottle in the airbox...so if i did run out i had a bit more so i didnt have to push as far :P basic tools to change levers incase they break and some spare levers as well.

Hey Rob,
Are you using the fancy plugs and having fowling issues?

Pack a length of fuel hose to transfer fuel from doner tank.
Disconnect their fuel line from the tap, attach your piece of hose to the tap and drain away.
Saves taking their tank off. ;)

Pack some cable ties - and use one of those power-steering bottles with the built-in stem in the cap for storing your 2T oil. It makes transferring oil much easier. Lecky tape and duct tape. Tie wire. Bandaids and some Panadol Forte !!

if something breaks that the above cannot fix - you can't fix it in the bush.

Hey, if your fouling a plug often ya gotta ask why. I would suggest to stretch it to 32 or 35:1, the big CR loves 40. If ya jeting ain't right ya will have shite
