Battery's shit itself!

After Cinishing a few jobs on the ZXR I got it to run off the battery and got the idle sitting OK but after giving it a few blips then a while more idling I turned it off at the key, turned away to grab something and the battery blew!

Nearly shit my pants to be honest!

Looks like 3 or 4 cells have given up and the battery was really warm afterwards and stayed warm for over an hour! Got a replacement battery but am wondering if it could be the regulator that's given up and is over charging the battery?

Is there any way to test it before I put in the new battery or is it worth just replacing the regulator?

Other than the obvious issue it was a good day as the engine ran without smoking heavily and only have a small ticking to trace but that could be because I've taken the smog valve off and have simply connected the hoses together! Saw it done like that on another ZXR!

Yep and mine failed in the weirdest way ....Anybody looking at the bike would have thought it was an electrical fault or short I for one thought mine was something more sinister.....I'm just glad it was the battery

Only thing I can think of is using a multi meter.

Watch the charge in the battery drop on starting then watch the rectifier reinstate the charge slowly. If it spikes or overcharges then you could have an issue

Could it be caused by a connector block being used on the wiring in place of the original connector? Found that today!
