Needle shims - where to buy?

Postby tim » Tue Aug 30, 2011 1:39 pm

G'day!

Haven't posted anything about the bandit 1200 for ages but it's been SOOO much fun and exceeded expectations on all counts. :D I'll have to get some pics up and write a review.

Now with a k&n filter and staintune bolt on with no baffle it's hesitating at full throttle only between 3.5k to 5k. Assume it's lean because choke smoothes it out but not entirely.

Tim helped me on the weekend a we pulled the carbies off, cleaned everything thoroughly, set float heights, roughly checked sync, reset mixture screws slightly rich (were allover the place), confirmed standard jets and needles.

Now it idles well smooth allover at low to mid throttle but WOT still stutters from 3.5 to 5k. Smooth everywhere else.

So, shim the needles? If so, where do I get em from and how much do you guys think to try first? A bit of bandit forum reading says either .5 to 1mm.......

I blame Glen for the Suzuki influence, I had a yellow suzuki shirt when I was young because that was the bike that uncle Glen owned

Go to the hardware or auto shop and buy some little washers to suit. That's what most bike shops will do when they shim needles. But, at 4K on your motor, it should be utilising the main jets by then. If you have a pipe and have standard mains, that would also be something I would be fiddling with, especially if the symptoms are not there when on an even throttle. Even throttle at 3.5k is probably still on the needle...just, but once you open the throttle, it's all main jet.

ohhhhhh interesting ok food for thought! Thanks Marty :kuda:

I've paid more attention and the symptoms are there at even throttle but not as pronounced - manifests more as a flat spot, not a stutter.

So main jets hey? I might do the shims first for fun to try it out and see the results, because I don't have to take the carbs out again to do that, just the tank, carbie top covers and the front of the airbox. But yeah after the reading I was doing last night here:

http://www.factorypro.com/tech_tuning_p ... gines.html

and what you've said looks like the main jet will have to be changed.

I had no idea tuning carbs would be this much fun! :D
