Tyre choice for Wet track days ??

Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:03 pm

Ok i am going to order a set of tyres for the track bike to use at the island in november just incase we get a wet track.
I have a set of 003 bridgstones on at the moment which i am happy with in the dry but was thinking might need a little more stability in the wet.My choices so far are Dunlop GP-A or mitchellen power pures.Anyone have any advise or better idears.
Metzlers are out as unavailable from this seller.

Dunlop Q2's would be the best allrounder tyre for dry or wet conditions by far. They're what the superbike school bikes run and I just had a set on the ZRX. and you can still get them from rockymountainatv ;)

Horses for courses really.

I wouldnt go the q2's in the wet but that's just from the little ride in the rain I had on the CDT.

Personally I would think PR2's are a great tyre in the wet, they have lots of big grooves right to the edge and run pilot power compOunds on the edge for softness.

Mal don't waste your money on anything other than a full wet. As long as there is no standing water the 003's will grip fine. From memory they did a 63 something with a wet turn one and wet crash corner and esses.

As for a PR2. The PR3 is better in the wet than the PR2 and I think the Dunlop equivelent might have been faster in a comparo from some Euro mag I saw recently and from memory again, you don't mind the feel of the loops either. The pure lets go in the wet, well before the PR3 does. That's from personal experience, riding with a guy I am faster than, but couldn't pass up a wet reefton. Everytime I tried, the pures walked across the road while his PR3's didn't move an inch in front of me.

Another suggestion if you don't run full wets, is to run a set of dual sport tyres or at worse a dual sport front if you can't find a 180 rear. They tend to not only have nice wide tread grooves, but also be softer in compound.

Also Mal, don't run the tyres at low pressures in the wet. In the wet they are not gunna get hot anyway and more air keeps the tread grooves open as they won't have as much pressure increase due to less heat.

I was going to ask that same question,
I'm running the pures on my tracky and at Wakefield last Wed, it was slick as, Due to it raining all day.
Do you recommend to up the pressures by 4 or more psi.

I'm surprised at that as I found them to be pretty good in the wet on the CDT this year. Must be because I ride slower and don't push them as hard.

Genuine wet tyres are generally advised to be run at a nominal pressure of 30/30, faster trackday/racers might run less than that e.g. 28/24. Have heard the story before, but you get more feedback at a slightly lower pressure, which is arguably worth more than the idea of the grooves closing up by an amount no one has ever quantified. Dont get started on warmers & wets, thats another controversy in itself, but understand that on a wet track they will prob get no heat so no real psi change cold to 'hot', so you end up with a tyre changing temperature from hot to cold as you're riding along, so work out actual track conditions before deciding to chuck them on.

Some say not much point, although warm rims might help for a while before everything gets cooled down but that may effect your pre-ontrack pressures :?
I dont have an opinion on this as I haven't run full wets but I suspect for the average trackday punter it wouldn't be very important.
