um now it wont start (ZX6RR)

Postby MrFaulty » Tue May 03, 2011 9:01 am

Yeah, throw the jokes at me about my name etc - I think I must have ridden over a black cat!

On the weekend I was adjusting, cleaining and lubing my chain but it is no good so have ordered a new one, the bike started on the centre stand but was making a racket because of tight spots in the chain (only when I put it in gear). Now it simply wont start, keeps winding over till the battery is flat :(

I have checked the main fuses (under the seat). Also of note is that I replaced the stator recently but I have ridden about 200kms since then with no issues.

Any suggestions about where to start looking - I was going to start by pulling each of the coil packs out and checking for spark but I really doubt theis is the problem. I am thinking more likely it is some hidden fuse or relay that may be gone.

Any suggestions appreciated and all ridicule accepted!

Thanks
Ben

Check wiring, plug connections in loom, switch blocks for corrosion and spiders ;) earth connections, side stand and clutch switches.

Fuel tap is on, tank breather clear, hoses and filter ok etc.

all of the side stand/center stand/switch block/kill switch/neutral concerns won't be it because the starter motor is cranking right?!

Not sure about ZX6, but my ZXR will start with sidestand down. It only cuts out when it's in gear and I release the clutch.I Used to think I was stalling it, took a while to figure out. They are all different some will allow starter to turn but no ignition, some don't allow starter to turn. I would definitely check the stand cutouts

It does sound like a side stand sensor... I'd check that even if the stand is up 'cause they're known to play up regardless of the bike you ride.

Ah, thanks, how do I check the stand sensor, simply run a by pass?

although if the sensor is stuffed that would be the same as the stand being down and then it shouldn't wind over?

I'm not sure how it goes on your bike... mine won't turn but I had other bikes that would.

ok, have it narrowed down a bit
looks like a fuel problem, fuel pump is working (checked). Disconnected fuel pump and wanted to start for a second, then backfired. Reconnected fuel pump and after a bit of trying, figured out it will start if I crack the throttle open and then I can back it off a bit but as soon as I back it off to much she stops. Also, when I have it running, the FI light is on on the dash.

Any suggestions about where to look. Also, if I can't find the problem, will it hurt to ride it like this to get it to a mechanic?

A mate suggested it may be to do with valve clearances as I am going to adjust check and adjust them but it seems to much of a coincidence that as soon as I plan this the bike plays up, also it wasn't running too bad before this happenned.

Thanks
Ben
