Gear indicator for a 1998 ZX9R???

Thu Apr 07, 2011 2:30 pm

Anyone got one, know where to get one or how to install it??

I'm aware there are two types (at least for Suzukis). One reads off the gear position thingie, and one "estimates" what gear you're in from the revs and your speed. I'd rather the first type, as I've heard the second type suck!

Personally, I reckon my Gear Position Indicator is way better than anything else on the market, but they ate difficult to come by. They are called a brain. Mine has never failed and it doesn't work off the speed & revs, or off the ecu. ;) ;)

Punched it into eBay but they were out of stock. I'll try again tomorrow... :kuda:

I fitted a DG8 to my race bike,& it worked very well. When I get the chance to look at it. Like has already been said, its called a brain. You'll soon find out if your a gear to hight or low...IMO :?

Same can be said about a fuel gauge, pressure gauge, altitude meter, etc, you'll "know" because your brain tells you... but it's nice to have one on some occasions when you're distracted by other things... pot-holes, taxis, Volvo drivers, sexy women, police radars, etc... then wonder, "what gear was I in...?" :?

I'm not dissing you for wanting one, it's your bike and your right to do whatever you want. You could paint it pink and use it as an anal intruder for all I care. But, a GPI, really shouldn't be used.

It should all be about feel. I rarely worry about the tacho or what gear I am in when riding, I just feel how the engine responds to throttle and regardless of speed, that will tell you if you are in the right gear.

I also pretty much know based on speed & revs what gear I am in too if I really want to know.

Fair enough. Good for you.
I've had a GPI and I liked it.
Not sure about using it as an anal intruder. Maybe you could let us all know how that worked for you. Never had one. Never used one...

I do ride based on the "feel" too, but it's nice to have the GPI there when my Jedi powers are running low... :D

How'd ya go Pan? I'm also thinking of getting one, or even building one.
I've just done a quick search, and seen them from $150 - $200

That's good for the weekend cruise, or around the track, but when you are riding to and from work, worrying about getting a speeding ticket all the time, a GPI is helpful 5footballhelmet.gif
