Bali A No-Go

Fri Apr 22, 2005 1:20 pm

After hearing that Schapelle Corby is going to spend the rest of her life in a Bali prison for having the misfortune to get drugs planted in her boogie board bag, has put me off ever visiting the place.

I usually scoff at these so called innocent drug smugglers, and dont believe their stories, however this time I think she may be a victim.
What do you lot think?
Innocent - due to the fact that bag was not padlocked and therefore easy to slip in drugs and easily identifiable by druggie in Bali, brave.gif
OR
Guilty - knew exactly what she was doing and hopeful to get away with it due to the excuses above? hat36.gif

The toughness of Bali doesn't seem to act as a deterent for those who are in fact guilty, 9 more arrested for having the stuff sellotaped to their bodies. violent1.gif

BASED ON WHAT I READ IN THE MEDIA
(important to state that)
I don't believe she did it
too many holes in the prosecution case

don't forget its a criminal trial and its up to the prosecution
to prove she did it (think that applies in Indonesia)

me??
I have no desire to go to Indonesia or Bali or jakarta or Timor

cheers

There's enough of Australia to explore without heading for Bali. As for this case - I think she's a victim and the government should have stepped in ages ago.

Funny that the airline has lost all the ticketing data for her and also the video wasnt working at the time she checked in ..hmmm. Me reckons baggage handlers were shipping the drugs from Bris to Syd, but the guy at sydney messed up. But how can something like that go through the scanners for all baggage on international flights?

Why bring drugs like dope into Bali FFS, it is worth 10 times less than what it would sell for here! :?

I reckon when I check in on a flight overseas I will demand a security check of my luggage and a document proving that my luggage was clean at the time of getting on the plane.

BTW - AFAIK, she hasn't been found guilty or sentenced yet.

The life jail term is what the procecution wants, it's now up to the judges to determine what they feel is the right punishment (if any).

I went to Bali just before Easter, and I only took hand luggage, had fun and managed to have an ATM eat my VISA...

:? i believe in Jochim's Razor, 'simplest explanation is usually the most correct'.

i don't buy the drugs are already cheaper in Bali argument, cause (alleged) drug couriers/trafficers aren't usually the world smartest people

the guy that they flew up to give evidence on her behalf is a very nasty peice of work who'd give up his grandmother if it meant getting time off his sentence

having said that i do have concerns about the justice system over there and no-one no matter how stupid should be put to death :(

The bottom line argument is this:

You wouldn't knowingly risk your life for a few hundred dollars worth of dope - the payout would have to be worth the risk. Therefore, unless she is REALLY stupid, then I can't believe that she did it.

Smuggling between states is much more likely. Fancy the security being so lax that this kind of thing is even a possibility...only now are they going to install CCTV

I've been to the USA twice since the 9/11 incident and both times the locks on my bags were broken by baggage handlers! (Crooks!) Were there any finger prints on her boogie bag? Like someone said, why brings drugs into Bali where they are worth 10 times less?

Three places you don't want to get caught (for whatever reasons) with drugs in Asia: Indonesia (they will put you in front of firing squad), Malaysia (they will hang you), Singapore (not sure what they do but you're dead anyway). For some reason they hate drugs very much. Things as simple as a puff of grass would give you 5 years in jail. CHECK YOUR BAGS BEFORE CUSTOMS!!

Corby, my heart with her. She could be the most unlucky person or the smartest con-artist who knows? The point is no one knows so don't punish her.

The rest of the guys, well, they are suckers. Don't they watch tv or something ?

you haven't been allowed to lock your luggage going into the US for the last 3 1/2 years, thats why they're broken open

pah, that's a crock of shit, i know the whole "terrorist terrorist terrorist" hooplah is a bit much, but htf do they figure that. They have sniffer dogs & x-ray machines, surely they are smart enough to figure out how to use them both to detect explosives.

fucking paranoid freaks.

oh yeah, i feel Sorry for Shapelle, it reminds me of that movie about the two girls in thailand that befrend someone and then get drugs stuffed in their bag before they hit customs, does it ring a bell to anyone?

blah, 30 seconds of googling gave me http://www.foxmovies.com/brokedownpalace/ and i thought of this particular storyline as soon as i heard of Shapelle's case. It's a great movie, i recommend watching it if you can find it.

*edit* look at the multimedia links if you've got a bit of bandwidth spare.

i reckon she's innocent.

i cant understand people trying to get way with heroin, ecstasy and other shit but not dope.

u gotta be an absolute idiot to export dope. Dope would have to be the biggest drug avaiable anywhere.

Well I went there for a week last year before all this stuff started and it was ok except for the local police who wanted to suplement their paycheck by holding me at a road block for 20 minutes, but there was no way i was going to pay them a rupiah even after they threatened me with fines. I wasnt wearing a lid whilst rideing a moped without a international licence but then agian so was everybody else and i realy have to learn how to ride a moped 4up.

Well there i was on one of my frequent buying outings looking for a can of coke when a local comes up to me as they do when you are out and about on your own trying to sell me some pot which is not so suprising after you have been there a few days as they will sell me bretts mum and nana for 20 rupiah.

I didnt find out how much he wanted for the hooch because he pulled it out in broad daylight on the main street and it looked like the real thing to me.

Was she stiched up .....well most likely because theres no point bringing your own if your that way inclined, would i go there again well probably but not right now and its a real eye opener for the first timers but watch you gear real closely. :D

the locals also tried to sell me speed, cocain, heroin, their sister, bretts mum, their sister and anything else that wasnt bolted down that possibly could have been of value.
