By jimminy i think i identified and (mostly) fixed the problem. The bike now slows down instead of holding the revs! All i need to do now is put a bit of lubrication on the sliders again. They aren't totally dry, but not as lubricated as they could be as it is slowing down to idle over about 5-6 seconds instead of only a couple. I guess i should plain on taking the carb top caps off again, or just being lazy and taking the air filter out and spraying wd40 in the throat.

Next on the agenda is to balance the carbs and possibly re-tweak the idle as i suspect it's been out for some time now. Oncei've got that done the true test will be taking her out on the road and giving her a shakedown.

take the slides out and give them another hit with the wet'n'dry. I think they need it.....

I had a feeling that was what i was going to have to do. Frankly i was hoping i wouldn't have to as the tank is a pain in the arse to re-fit after it comes off.

FIXED!

Turns out all i needed to do to fix the carb sticking issue was swap the carb sliders between the carbs  Way too much time spent fu*ing about and that was the fix .

what you should do, is measure up the carbie throats OD on the engine side, and see if you can get a set of 2nd-hand carbs off a late-model GS500. You can just ditch the electronic bits you don't need, and I will bet my house that the response will be light-years from those old shitter that were fitted. I think you will find that these late-model carbs should pretty much bolt straight up ?

Hmm, that's a bloody interesting idea. however the gsx has twin carbs, not a single, so i suspect it won't exactly be the right size.

Concept is still interesting though.

the GS 500 is a twin ....I reckon they will just about bolt straight on....

Haven't got a vacume leak have you.. Maybe, possibly..
Usually get backfiring from inlet manifolds but you are probably onto it with the slide thing any way, but I thought I would chuck my 2 bobs worth in..

Already checked it with "start ya bastard" which is an ether based aerosol (don't use in an enclosed space unless you like passing out) and sprayed it all over the carbs, boots, backside of the heads as well as the vacuum guage screwhead thingo's that have been sealed up. Absolutely nothing, so i am 100% confident it isn't an issue with air leaks.

Hopefully the new carbs arrive tomorrow and i can strip them down, clean them out and just do a straight swap.

Just reading on another forum, gpx/zzr250's use pretty much a compatible carby (cvk30), if the new ones turn out to be a bust i might look into getting a late model pair of these.
