My dilema - 1999 ZX6 Tracky

Postby StuMiller » Sun Jun 06, 2010 11:17 am

Howdy all,
I've just relocated to Tas (no that's not the problem) and now my bike won't start. Before I left Melb, she used to start first time, everytime. It has now sat idle for approx. four weeks and now will not start. I roll started it the other day and it sounded like it was missing a cylinder. I replaced the plugs, oil, filters and all those things in Melb back in Jan and it has been fine since.
When I initially tried to start it, it sounded like sparks or a short of some sort or like the battery was really struggling to generate enough power to turn it over. Now the battery is dead, so that will be the first thing I replace.
What are your thoughts on fouling plugs, bad leads (recommend a replacement), battery, other possibilities.
Any help here would be great.
Cheers!

This short you described, was it like a ticking noise when you tried to start it?
If so thats the relay telling you that your battery is cactus.

Yes, sounded like a short spark noise.....

Think I'll put new leads on it just in case as one of the leads into the spark plug holder can actually come away from the holder...not too sure if that's supposed to happen. Hasn't been an issue until now...

You've answered your own question! Try charging it first and if it won't hold a charge get a new one. There's no point even thinking about other causes until you've eliminated that one and given the time of year and how long it sat idle it's the most likely cause.

I have since removed the fuel tank, checked the leads, replaced and filled the tank, charged the battery and nothing.

There is plenty of charge, but it just won't turn over.

It backfired a couple of times when trying to start it with and without the choke, but damn it , it won't go.

Suggestions on what else I can try.....

Cheers.

Hi all again,

I've now checked just about everything and still nothing.

I have a feeling the bike was left out in the rain by the removalists so can you recommend a few check I should make?

All fuses, fuel tap, battery, leads, plugs etc are all fine.....I need some help from someone with some real knowhow.

Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Is your fuel pump working, maybe your your fuel pump relay is the problem, lift your fuel tank off, and with the fuel line disconnected, try starting again.
I have 2 ZX6's 1for a track bike and other road bike. I to have trouble sometime starting when left for a considerable amount of time as well, and seems like the fuel pump takes a while to purge.
Cheers John

Should I block the fuel intake to check for suction?
