Air intake - Silly novice mistake

Hi all,

Thought I would share an "issue" I had with my '09 Z750.

Sunday I had ridden to PITS. Done a few laps and rode home. Got about 500m away from home, took off down the quiet street just near my house and "opened" her up. She had got to about 10k rpm, had a really big cough, spluttered and eventually (when I slowed down) stalled. She would restart but would sort of idle and any thorottle use would make her stall again.

After some thought I presumed it was dirty fuel. I had just bought a new petrol can and filled her up from this the very morning. Realised that I had not flushed the can first and presumed it had bits of "stuff" in it. So I limped the bike home and started a strip down. As it is a new bike I had not taken the tank off before. Got nervous and decided to find a service manual. Read through the service manaul rang my father and suggested he come round to help me pull out the fuel pump and fuel injectors.

So we read about the removal of the injectors and fuel pump. Get everthing we need to start the job. I look down at the compartment below the seat and notice my wet weather pants seem to look a bit strange. They seem to be pulled into some sort of plastic. I have a closer look .... "umm dad, what are the three things an engine needs to operate", "fuel, spark and air" is the answer that comes back. Turns out the wet weather pants had been sucked into the air intake which is under the seat ..... oops.

So I have learn't a few things from this. How to remove the tank etc from my bike to get to the guts of things. How not to pack my wet weather pants into the compartment ... and to check all three major needs of an engine before I get excited about major "repairs" to the bike :-)

Doh!! But its just so tempting to put stuff under the seat considering there is NO space under the pillion seat isn't it!!?! Good to hear it wasn't anything major ;)

On the bright side, at least he didn't take it into a shop and ask 'em to fix it.

Mike, I had a classic on a beemer once, riding along then suddenly no clutch (cable operated) have a look everything seems to be working so I guess its the clutch thats gone , take it to be repaired, get a call soon after, turns out a rock had lodged itself behind the clutch pushrod & got stuck, effectively holding the clutch open  felt like a right goose when picking her up  but in my defence you cant get to that area or the bike without getting under it :?
