Endurance for ZXR250???

Thu Apr 07, 2005 10:01 pm

Hey all!

Im new here so i hope this topic hasn't already been brought up (i did search but to no avail!!) I just bought a '92 built '97 compl ZXR250C with only 23,000 on the clock.

Great bike, fun to ride and very tidy, but only one problem (yet) - no fuel gauge!! I think the tank is about 22 litres from memory - does anybody have any ideas on how far would this get me. I'm not what you call an aggressive rider, but then again im no sunday driver either.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Cheers,
Leith. :?

Welcome Leith, Mate what most people do is fill the bike to the top, reset trip meter to 000, ride until it splutters from lack of fuel, turn the fuel tap located near your left knee (usually) to Reserve & look for a servo to fill up. Remember how many kms were on the trip meter when it spluttered & always fill up 10-20ks under that number of ks. Trip meter n fuel Reserve will always keep you outta trouble.
HTH.
Cheers Brett

Lethal, there is no way you'll ever get 22 litres in the tank. Its more like 14 or 15 before your running on fumes. I have done 220kms on my current tank load and still have a bit of fuel covering the main base of the tank. I do like to give it a bit but I would say you should be safe getting about 250kms out of a tank around town and a little further on a trip. Having said that I went through a tank and a half at a ride day one time and had done just over 100kms.

hey leith,
i just bought the same bike about 2weeks ago.
i find i get at least 250 kms out of a tank when commuting.
Went for a ride hrough king lake and i prob only got 160/170kms out of it.
Stretch out 1st every time you pull off from the lights and u'll be in trouble.
Brett's spot on though, use ur trip meter.
once u get used to the bike, u'll know ur gettin low by how the bike handles. The weight diff b/w full and empty is pretty noticable.

cheers, vince

I agree with all thats been said..

Set yaself a limit of what you will comfy do... 200km for example. then that is your fill point. or fill the farker every second day on way home...lol

cheers

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice - i think i'll work on about 200kms for the type of riding im gonna be doing!

As for the 22litre thing - that was a pretty wild stab in the dark coz at the moment me and my ride are seperated by about 180km but i get it back on Sunday YAY!!!!

Thanks again guys, keep up the great atmosphere in this here forum!

Lethal.

i know its a different bike, but how much more power over a zzr250 do they put out to justify a different in milage of over 100kms/tank. My old ZZR used to give me 380kms/tank. Just curious...

Purely engine wise the zxr is a 4 cylinder engine compared to the gpx/zzr's twin cylinders. It has a higher redline, has far less torque at lower revs (8k and below) and is more of a sporty engine. Off the line the gpx motor would have more umph at lower revs as the higher torque makes it more tractable until the zxr250 gets up to about 11-12krpm, at which point i suspect it'd whoop the gpx).

Doing some backyard maths (so likely very dodgy) i calculated that at 12krpm the gpx consumes about 1.275m2 of air each minute and it uses approximately 86ml of fuel, at around 18krpm the zxr250 would be eating 1.9m2 of air each minute and about 130ml of fuel each minute.

So long story short, the top end rush makes it a lot hungrier for fuel & air

(i used http://www.stealth316.com/2-air-fuel-flow.htm to calculate the airflow stuff & devided by 14.7 which is the stoichimetric(sp?) optimum burn ratio)

thanks for the info. I was under the misimpression that the ZXR250 was a twin too.

Still think its a bit much for a 250 since the 1000 gives me 230 for 14 litres. Sorry to highjack the thread guys. As you were

Cheers.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon. My 6R gives about 260 for 14L. Those little screamers are thirsty!

yeah but i bet ur 6r doesnt rev to 19000 rpm before hitting redline thought? more revs+more fuel+more power?

welcome mate.

i thought the tank might be 18L and try to fill it up every 200km.

Not trying to turn this into a debate, but the 6R's still rev to 17000 rpm or there abouts and produce WAY MORE power than the 250, think about double and some. So that isnt really a vaild reason. And you do spend a lot of your time on a 600 in the mid high to high rev range cause they dont have any bottom either.

Need to further investigate this motor....
