All good Cossie - these babies have lasted well. I was a bit concerned about the longevity of the threads, seeing as I scabbed out and used galvinised turnbuckles and not s/steel......but the threads have not chewed out at all.

I have not needed an R-clip, as the tension from the t/buckles and the front C-channel is enough to hold the bike upright and tight.

MickLC from this forum had his mate knock up a set, using threaded booker rod for the through-axle section, and he also turned up some nice big nylon 'collars' that sit either side of the hub - these act almost the same as an R-clip, and the D-shackle on either side sits nicely inside the channel of the collar. They are a bit tidier than mine - when Mick pops along and sees this thread back up, I am sure he will bung up a photo of his set-up - he uses it for his ZX10R and his mates ZX14.

Yep, here's a pick of our setup. I can take a closeup of the nylon bushes if you want but it'll have to wait until I dig them out again.

Dont know if this helps but we borrowed Mick's magic tie down system at christmas for my ZZR and have a couple of pics (I loved this thing - the bike didnt move, and we did around 2000kms!) :kuda:

Each side nylon bits comes in two pieces, one is a flat disc with hole through the middle, and the other is almost like a champagne cork (it has a step where the shackle fits).

Thanks Guys!

Gives me a few ideas to work with. Good to hear they are still going strong.

Gotta be better than the crossover handle bar straps which seem to be destroying my handgrips.

Yep - way better than those crossover straps. Not only will they destroy your grips, I have seen clip-ons actually bent under the pressure exerted from these straps. They are also shithouse for fork seals, like any sort of tie-down from the bars or even the bottom triple clamp. (for longer trips anyway. Short trips around the burbs - no worries.)

If anyone has an older bike with a solid front axle, there is a better way of tying these bikes down as well, cheap and cheerful...

Just wrap the longer end of a normal tie-down around the upper fork-leg, right on top of the lower fork leg, 2 or 3 times. You can wrap a bit of rag around here if you like - and then just hook the strap through the hook a short distance away from the fork leg. Other end of tie-down goes down to a tie-down point.....and tighten it up . Do this on the other side. Bingo - the bike is attached nice and tight, and rides on its own suspension, so the fork seals are not damaged. I used to trailer the Black Pearl to the track like this all the time. It works really well, and you don't need any costly bits apart from your standard tie-downs. This method works best if no dust-covers are present on the lower fork legs.

the actual design of those bar-end straps is entirely shithouse. It places *all* the stresses at the very end of the handlebars/clip-ons while travelling. Anyone who understands basic physics, would see that this style of tie-down is the worst possible.

Looks great and very functional but there appears to be a reflection in the mudguard....
Looks like shrek took the pic?? :?

I'm thinking of mounting the camera's using the same hollow axle ;)
