oil change problem

Postby mark 72 » Thu Feb 25, 2010 9:33 pm

first time user . i have a zx6r 97 model which has been very reliable. after replacing the oil and oil filter , the oil light stays on and it does not sound like it is picking up oil.i am affraid to run it as i dont want to damage it. i cant seem to get any help where i am and i am now stuck with what to do. the oil light allways went out as soon as it started but now remains on. as far as i was aware after an oil change the oil should pick up within minutes and off you go. but !!!! can someone please help with my problem if possible. thanks. mark.

Only idea I have Mark is that it sounds like the famous "burping" issue.

There should be much more knowledge around here for you, just that at the moment a lot of it is riding to phillip island. In the future pour some fresh oil into the filter before you fit it.

Ok, here's a bit of comic relief - my embarrassing oil change story. :D

I had it on the center stand, did all of the correct oil changing stuff, started her up and she was running really rough, bike kinda shaking.

Called Glen, talked to him - no idea.
Did some searching on the net thought the oil filter needed "burping".
Did all of the steps, still running rough.

Scratched my head.

Started it again.

Still running rough.

Then I noticed something.

IT WAS IN GEAR ON THE CENTER STAND, THE REAR WHEEL WAS SPINNING AND IT COULDN'T GET ENOUGH REVS UP.

i have tried this burping issue , but does not seem to be working for me. i loosend the filter until it leaked and ran it but the oil light stayed on. tried with the rear wheel raised and the oil level high but light stayed on. . am i doing something wrong or did i get some oil with a gremlin in it ? it has got me beet . are there any other ideas out there that i can try before i loose it. i tried filling the filter before putting it on but its a bit off a lost cause when the filter is on the front of the motor. i need help . thanks for the ideas and help . i would like to fix this problem myself rather than paying a bush machanic. how long should you run the bike until it picks up the oil. should i try bleading the line ?

have you tried covering the oil light with a piece of tape?
or maybe removing the bulb for it?

You never fit a dry oil filter. Remove the filter fill it with oil, stand it upright let the oil settle and refill. the fit it to the motor . start the motor and let it idle until the light goes out.
