Motorcycle Alarms

Does anyone know anything much about motorbike alarms and immobilisers?

Working in the city, I park my 250 in front of the bar so that the bouncers can watch it. The amount of times people would come and fiddle with the bike and have the bouncers scare them off is quite disturbing. I park my bike in many different places, and as I will be riding my ZX9R around everywhere soon, I want to be able to scare those idiots off as well.

I don't konw anything at all about motorbike alarms so any tips would be great. All I can findo n Ebay is this one:

has anyone heard of this brand? Anyone know what it costs to get this installed?

If ya just wanna stop people playing on it, not a bad idea - but it won't stop it getting stolen. It's not so bad here, but in UK the theives pick bikes up and put them in soundproof vans.

Make sure you get a pro to fit it, as farkin' up the wiring loom will be a mare to sort out and affect reliability/resale value.

If you wanna stop someone walking off with it, I reccommend a very thick chain and high quality lock. Mine is 1 meter long with 1/2 inch thick links and a Kryptonite D lock that fits round the chain and disc. It cost over $250 but I have had it 8 years and never had a bike stolen!

Perhaps so, but the chain used to look after my Kwak until some nice young lady drove over it....

It must help a little bit with the bike being stolen...

Any ideas on installation prices?

I think the heavy chain might be the go too...

All to often I see alarms going off in carparks being completely ignored by everyone, once I even saw someone driving along while the alarm was going. Nobody takes any notice, and you can blame years of crappy, hypersensitive alarms that go off if an ant sneezes next to the car.

There is a car here that goes off all the time. One day if it actually does get stolen, everyone will cheer the thief on - there is only so many times you can be woken at 3.30 in the morning for some dodgy alarm that just keeps going off every 5 minutes for half an hour...

Theives are looking for an easy score, so make it as hard as you can, but remember if they really, really want to steal it they will find a way whatever you do.

Being a low volume seller, probably keeps kwaka's off the list for people stealing for parts to sell on ebay

I once had an alarm on a bike, and because I wasn't commuting / riding it daily, it would drain the battery within a week. I had to wire a battery tender to it and when I parked it at home it had to be plugged into a power point. By the time it went off due to low voltage, there wasn't enough charge left to start the bike.

Using the bike daily it should be fine though if you do a few miles and the battery gets a chance to recharge.

That seems perhaps a little bit too fancy doesn't it?
Mongoose has one that allows you to start the motorbike with the push of a button as well. I just need one that will turn off automatically and re-arm after 5 mins or something.

I have that alarm on my 98 ZX9R. Fully comp insurance was just a frieking joke so ended up spending a grand on other security instead. Alarm works great. You can have it installed yourself in an hour or two. Has movement sensor, tilt sensor and ignition sensor plus other things like remote shutdown etc.

It claims to have an 800metre range but I think 100m is closer to the mark to be honest. Doesnt bother me though because if Im ever more then 100metres away from it its locked up like fort knox anyway.

Attached is a pic of what was included in the box. Was very neatly packaged and everything was easy to put together/understand.

Certainly not the cheapest alarm out there but I think its worth it. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Now if I could just get my bloody cat to stop jumping on the bike at 3am...

If you want a alarm you want a real one, even if your bike is chained to a post it only takes a second to knock of your 900dollar end can and go walking off down the street.

I dont park my bike anywhere I am not but i know some people comute on them and a chain would be a essential item and posibly a rotweiler as well for good measure or i supose you could ride a hoonda.

Anyway i have had a good look at that scorpio unit and you can turn down the proximety sensor so it doent go off till you on top of it and get a unit so it will keep squealing even after the battery wires have been cut.

Theres a more expensive one that is silent when stolen but sends gps coordinates to your mobile phone by sms so you can round up your mates and pay the fuker a visit.

get the bouncer to scream when someone touches the bike.

i had the mongoose one on my zx6r, then on my vtr. it was great.i got sick of hearing it go off wen the neighbours cat jumped on it (i had it set to super sensitive)...i cant condone carrying around 15kg of chain in my back pack every day either...
the mongoose was abt $5-600 fitted i think, and i never had probs with it de-charging the battery, even wen i rode once or twice a week...

Now if I could just get my bloody cat to stop jumping on the bike at 3am...

About 15 years ago I had a cat that knew how to turn the stereo in my room on. It would do it at 2 am almost without fail (indoor cat). I figured I'd fix the little rotter, and turned up the volume one night. Sure enough, about 2 am I was woken up with the bed shaking under the onslaught of the "music" that was blaring from the speakers, and the silly cat was sitting on the top of the stereo with its ears going up and down with the beat!

After that I just shut my door. And when the cat figured out how to open it, I barricaded it. Barricading oneself in because of a 4 kg feline!
