Getting older is shite!!!!!!

Postby Glen » Fri Nov 27, 2009 2:43 pm

You realise you're starting to get older when shit starts going wrong and you have no idea why.

After the last ARDC practise day I pulled up with both elbows fairly sore. Thought to myself .... I thought I was going better so maybe I was working a bit harder.....ohhh you poor old fool.

After a week or two it didn't get any better and then my hand started to feel a bit tingly/numb...thought that's a bit weird but it's OK must be related to the elbows...it'll go away.

Went to Phillip Island, elbows/arms felt shit, could manage about two laps and then give up. Come back from PI they're not getting better, in fact they are slightly worse. Finally think stuff it I'll go see a physio and guess what...he reckons pharking tennis elbow, as they used to call it. Apparently now they call it someting else to make it sound less like an old farts problem but I've strained the ligaments in my elbows. No idea how I did it, perhaps unloading the bike from the impossibly difficult front wheel clamp thingo's you get with an easy trailer. Apparently this can take anywhere from two weeks to 6 months to settle down....awesome

Anyone done anything like this and what do you do the get it sorted quicker (no pills either). I've got exercises to do for the next two weeks so hopefully it'll be better by the Chrissy track day.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Pain away spray..... :-)

I feel your pain, I did my shoulder the week before the St George series race in June. (stupid tyre changer thingo..!!).
Thought, it'll get better and strapped it for the 2 days of racing..
It hasn't got better and its still painful now... I figure I'll finally go to the doc after the Xmas day, I didn't want any bad news before P.I. and xmas...

Try an osteopath, have had similar problems in the past and it stems from using muscles you are not normally using.

+1 Have heard lots of good things about osteopath's helping with things that people thought couldn't be helped..... they take a wholistic and multi-discipline approach to the whole issue etc and look forward to prevention etc.

It would be worth asking my mum about the elbow Glen, she's a wizz at that stuff and she has a set of professionals she strongly recommends, and she might have some ideas on massage etc

give chris glen. It's to big and powerful for your old body to control. You probably will find it much easier on a girlie bike like a 6r :kuda:

It's called lateral epicondylitis. It's when you overload the attachment of your forearm extensors at the attachment on your humerus. It can be from poor biomechanics (poor technique of a movement), overuse or overloading it.

A GOOD physio, chiropractor or osteopath will do the same sort of thing these days. Unfortunately there are still heaps of not so good ones around. All three disciplines should take a holistic approach and will all work the soft tissue and mobilise joints to relieve neural impingement. My Physio utilises cupping and dry needling (acupuncture) among plenty of other hands on techniques but doesn't use any electronic devices. Times have changed and the good ones have learnt from the other disciplines so that they all do similar work now.

Your best bet is to find a good physio/osteo who works with professional athletes. It will require a combination of progressive exercises and soft tissue work (massage) to help it recover so be prepared to go a few times to get it right (ie once a week for a few weeks). Preventative taping will also help to avoid recurrence when you are doing things that load it up. If you want, I can tape it up for the Christmas track day.

Haha, yeah, forgot to mention anti-inflammatories. Cortisone and non-steroid anti-inflammatories (Nurofen, Voltaren, Celebrex, Mobic etc) are a good short cut to help recovery but there is a risk of further injury involved with cortisone injections if you load the muscle up in the first few days as the tissue is weakened by it. You just need to make sure you're not doing any heavy lifting or really fatiguing work for a few days after the injection but the relief will be substantial. I would suggest still getting it treated though or you will most likely have recurrence issues.

Just do what I've been doing for years. Pop 600mg of Ibuprofen before you hop on....and bingo....no pain! Oh......and you may need to take em for a few days after that too!! ;)
