Well after my first track day (OP 13 August) where I put a few scratches on my bike, I decided to get a tracky...Went to Melbourne on Tuesday and picked up a ZX9 F1.
The bad...

So I got stuck in and ripped the fairings off and replaced the radiator. Changed oil and filled with nice new coolant. Started it up...fired immediately...bonus...obviously the oil leaks from the side cover buy not enough to worry it while I warmed it up.
Sounds sweet...

Next will be a set of race glass...and then a track day to just have a ride and sort out some priorities...
Does everyone get this excited with their first tracky...

Would welcome any suggestions from the experienced trackaholics out there...

Thats better..

I spent many years punting a 98 zx9r around the track and had a blast..
The best things I did or it alreay had, Quick action throttle, factory pro shift kit, ohlins shock and ohlins fork springs. It had plenty of HP for an old girl...

All I need to get it mobile is an engine cover (LH) and radiator overflow bottle...
Trying to find previous owner so that I can find out what has been done to it. With the pipe and K&N filter I wonder if a jet kit has been put in...
Rear shock looks like it could be stock...the spring is yellow??? Hard for me to tell if the forks have been modified...

With the overflow bottle, just get a clear plastic drink, or similar, (try to find a thickish one) bottle and drill a hole in the lid so the overflow hose fits thru it tight and seals on the lid. Run the hose to the bottom of the bottle.
Thats all my track / race bikes have ever had.
You can also get the cover welded if its only that small crack. Its magnesium but can still be repaired.

More than likely, especially those doing the transformation at home

nothing beats a strip down & rebuild, fabricating parts & basically doing modifications that you normally would not do on your roadie, there is self satisfaction & gratification from this sort of DIY.
My biggest hurdle with projects similar to yours is that I am impatient & need to keep reminding myself to slow down & not rush

when i stacked my 9, i cracked the stator cover too and it ran for a few moments on its side starved of oil. The owner now tells me the motor has developed a bit of a dam arse knocking sound!
Do you get that also, or seems sweet ?

No sounds real sweet but won't know for sure until I can give it a good run.

I nearly cried when I heard it went down so I can imagine how you
and Rod felt. That bike is a thing of beauty.

You will be much happier (and relaxed) punting a trackified 9 around. I can't wait to get mine out on the track for the first time.
