What oil for my zx6r?

Mon Mar 07, 2005 12:36 pm

My ZX6 is due for oil change and I want to DIY -it.

What oil (brand/type) do you use ? I know the classifications (SF and above) but what's popular around here ?

Thanks.

motul mate.

stick to it as changing brands of oil can damage the internals.

Interesting.Tthat's a bit high compared to the usual car lubricant. Are they motorcycle-specific?

mina
thats crap......
changing from fully Synthetic to semisynth or vice versa
maybe may cause some issues
as will mixing brands and mixing viscosities
but changing brands.....pleeeze...

Andy
always use a bike specc'd oil
yes.. a car oil with the right spec or viscosity will be fine
(SF SG etc or 15w-50 etc etc) BUT it won't work in the gearbox,
bike oils are for use in both high revving engines and gearboxes...

find an oil that works in your bike and stick with it
you will know if you bike does not like it..
missed gearchanges and false neutrals will occur

I use either Castrol GP (now Castrol GPS) or Motul
the semi synth types ..at around $30-$35 per 4lt container
mine HATES Shell....

and always change your filter at the same time

hth

cheers

motul and any non-kwak oil filter (over priced rusty pieces of shit)... the other jap brands rock and are less than 1/2 price!

andy...i put motul 5100 in mine last change and has made gear changes heaps smoother but more positive. (i dont know what was in it before whatever peter stevens use :? )

also doesn't clunk as hard when selecting first at a standstill :D

I'm pretty sure peter stevens use mobil.

what do you guys do when you take it to be serviced at a place that doesn't use the oil you like? tell em you'll do the oil change yourself or what ?
