Don't wory about the hijack Pete, It won't be long before this thread turns nasty.... always does with Religion and Politics.........

George Carlin funniest guy I ever heard back in the 80's and he didn't need to add the swearing, his content was funny with or without it..............

If there was no such thing as man would God exist? People will always invent ideas to believe in to give meaning to their lives.

These made me giggle.

Cath wrote:You misspelled Theory of Evolution and "creation" stories
One has gained enough evidence to be elevated to the status of scientific theory, while the other is a non-scientific variety of changing-goalpost guesses as to how one of the versions of one type of Christian bible can be shoehorned into the observable facts and evidence.

It also has nothing to do with the topic of the thread, as belief in a God and inability to understand science are entirely separate things.

But it does have a lot to do with the thread topic.
If you believe there is a god then the "creation" stories as you put it (spelt the same way I spelt it in the first place  ), are what you believe, mainly because the book of God (the Bible for those who may not know) puts it this way, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth" Genesis 1:1

On the other hand, if you dont believe in God, then the Theory of Evolution (I also spelt it this way  ) is the most probable and scientific way of concluding that this was how the earth and universe came about. I wouldnt have thought you needed to have a PhD in Science to work this out.

I really dont understand why my original post was not on topic, I could have given a yes / no answer, but seeing as everyone else had put there 2 cents worth in I thought I would do the same.

I dont know which Christian Bible your reading but Genesis 1:1 in every Christian Bible I have read states "In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth".

Theres another 1 cent, so that makes 3 cents now.

(Please note :- the line above "Theres another 1 cent, so that makes 3 cents now" has nothing to do with this thread what so ever, it is the contribution and personal opinion of KSRC member ZX6Rider (me).

Hey zx6rider,
About your use of quotation marks - I was only making a little joke, nothing at all to do with your spelling! 8) If you want me to try to explain it I will, but explaining jokes often doesn't work. But I'm happy to try if you want me to clear it up as you sound upset with me. That wasn't what I was aiming for - I figured we probably agree on the basic points and I was having a fun post. I obviously missed the mark on that one - sorry!

The only other things I'll say is that there are many believers (in the traditional Judeo-Christian God of the bible) that are not bible literalists. In fact, I would say the majority of Australian Christians are not literalists and instead believe that much of the bible (and definitely Genesis would be included in this) is to be read as an allegory, not as a literalt, factual scientific account of how the world began. So it is quite possible for a Christian to believe in Jesus, God and the bible and still have no problems accepting evolution, as they would not contradict each other. Hope this makes sense.

I think it's time for a new sig. One of my favourite god-related quotes  I hope it gives you a smile zx6rider :kuda:

Cath, I worked for a couple of years in a Catholic school and had to teach religion while I was there (yes I know, the irony of an atheist teaching religion). The CEO curriculum taught Adam and Eve as a creation STORY just like the Dreamtime was for Aboriginal culture etc and for it not to be taken literally. You are right in assuming most Australians are not literalistic and it's reassuring that religious based education in this country takes this view; unlike the indoctrinated fanatical beliefs that are often evident in the US.

Dunno - my family, and congration while I was 'growing up', were quite literal about the whole thing. My brother-in-law (sister's hubby) is a minister who believes the bible to be the literal truth in its entirety. I don't understand that attitude any more that it seems some of you might. Needless to say we tend to stay away from religious discussion in family get togethers.

That's a great quote Cath.

I don't believe in mythology. Also, religion has been the begining of way to many wars/confrontations for me to consider it a good thing.

I'm ignostic. I have my beliefs, but they certainly don't revolve around the Christian understanding of God.
