My sunday night combo

Postby 98ninja » Sun Jun 14, 2009 2:45 pm

Every weekend for the last 6 weeks ive been riding from goulburn to Newcastle for the weekend and i return on the sunday arvo.
its getting REAL cold anywhere south of Campbeltown.
over the weeks ive made adjustments to what i wear and im looking for some cheap improvements to my warmth.
heres my best combination so far.

Oxtar boots with army socks underneath (thick socks)
Big W thermal pants under Joe rocket textile pants.
bonds singlet
t shirt
thermal long sleeve shirt from Target
ski shirt from aldi with skivvy neck
light ski jacket from Aldi
Frank thomas leather jacket
"MCR" thermal gloves ( from ebay)

my head doesnt get cold so no balaclava for now , and i havent been a fan of them.
Ear plugs and AGV helmet.

the main problem has been the cold air getting in.
this is my first week with the skivvy neck thermal shirt. well see how it goes.
my hands are FREEZING and i lose feeling in the tips of a few fingers.
the gloves seem ok , they have thinsulate but im looking for toasty warm hands.

Any suggestions or tricks to improving the two problem areas?

Wife and I rode from the city down to the southern highlands this morning at about 6am so I get where you are coming from. It's freezing out at the moment. Fingers went numb after about 20 minutes on the highway. Was in full leathers which did a reasonable job of keeping me a little higher than hyperthermia temperature though i think i will be investing in some thermals. Was wearing a skivvy under my jacket which seemed to do an ok job, legs got pretty cold though. Biggest problem was my hands, and my lack of neck warmer....

Don't buy the cheaper gear. Spend the money on good gear and you will be very comfortable. Dainese jacket and pants like Jetpilot and Phil and gloves like Robracer's. You can also get thermal inner gloves that help quite a bit. They are the difference between my hands staying warm and feeling a bit cold in my winter gloves. If you are going to spend a bit of time riding in the cold (and most likely wet) you a better off spending the money on the best gear with products like Gortex in them that keep you dry and warm.

Can vouch for the cold in Goulburn...lived there for about 40 years. Worst was light snow on boxing day in 1966 I think it was... :kuda:

One thing I have tried which has worked as have done some night riding, when freezing is actually wearing two thermal tops and then a jumper or long sleeve top or something like that on top as well and all that underneath my textile jacket which has the quilt lining, that kept the cold wind out heaps. Bit bulky but at least kept warm.

I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

Might have to look into the BMW gloves. Would just have to get rid of the BMW logo.

For an early morning ride I wear some thermal liners in my teknic gloves, thermal pants under draggin jeans, army socks (ex aj so still got plenty lying around), thermal top, long sleeve tshirt, light jumper, neck warmer and Dri Rider Summit jacket. Later in the day I can usually get rid of the thermal top and light jumper as the Summit jacket is a beauty.

Have heard plenty of good things about the heated grips though haven't tried them myself.
